President Obama Designates National Monument To Honor LGBT Movement
The Stonewall Inn in New York City was a gathering place for the gay community. In 1969, police raided the Inn, leading to the Stonewall Uprising. The arrest lead to the first major movement for the LGBT community.
President Obama’s Approval Rating At Highest Level In 5 Years
President Obama’s ap- proval rating is at its highest level in more than five years, an ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Sunday shows.
According to the results of the survey, conducted in the af- termath of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., two weeks ago, 56 percent of Americans approve of Pres- ident Obama’s handling of his job as president, compared to 41 percent who disapprove.
The last time the Presi- dent’s approval rating was this high was in May 2011 fol- lowing the killing of Osama bin Laden in a nighttime raid led by U.S. Navy SEALS in Pakistan.
According to the Washington Post, President Obama is more popular now than Pres-

idents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush were at this point in their presidencies, though not quite as popular as Bill Clinton in 2000.
The results of the survey are
in line with a recent CNN/ORC poll that found 52 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s performance as president, up 5 points since January.
And according to that survey, also conducted in the wake of the nightclub massacre, Obama “ranks as the most positively viewed recent sec- ond term president.”
Both Clinton and Ronald Reagan, were viewed favor- ably “by just under half of adults in the spring or summer of their final years in office.” George W. Bush’s favorabil- ity rating, by contrast, was just 38 percent at this point in 2008.
All of this is good news for Hillary Clinton, who was en- dorsed by Obama earlier this month.
Last Friday, President Obama designated a new na- tional monument at the his- toric site of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City to honor the broad LGBT equal- ity movement.
The new ‘Stonewall National Monument’ will protect the area where, on June 28, 1969, a community’s uprising in re- sponse to a police raid sparked the modern LGBT civil rights movement in the United States.
“I’m designating the Stonewall National Monu- ment as the newest addition to America’s National Park Sys- tem. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the rich- ness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one,” he said.
In addition to protecting more land and water than any Pres- ident in history -- more than 265 million acres -- Presi- dent Obama has sought to

protect places that are diverse, culturally and historically sig- nificant, and that reflect the story of all Americans.
Earlier this year, President Obama designated the Bel- mont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument, a site that has been central to the fight for women's equality for over a century.
By honoring the history and accomplishments of the movement for LGBT equality, today’s designation will be a historic moment in this effort towards a more inclusive Na- tional Park System.
President Obama says he’d like to be the next Owner- in-Chief of an NBA franchise, but which one?
White House press secretary Josh Earnest announced last Wednesday that the Pres- ident has “discussed” owning an NBA squad, according to the Washington Post. The President also said he would “absolutely” want to be part of the ownership for an NBA team in an interview with Bill Simmons for GQ Magazine last year.
Naturally, we wondered what team suits No. 44 best. Here are six teams President Obama could end up with. Ac- cording to the New York Daily News, here are some of the picks:
Chicago Bulls
This should not surprise any basketball fan or Chicago na- tive. President Obama has spent most of his life in Chicago as a professor, state senator and U.S. Senator (D- IL). He is a Bulls fan and is not shy talking about the great '90s teams, specifically the ‘96 Bulls.
Knicks
The Knicks are another good option for the president thanks to Obamacare. With recently acquired, injury-prone Der- rick Rose, the Knicks will need someone to help keep the team on the court. And who is better to manage a team’s healthcare than the President who signed into law the Af- fordable Care Act? The Knicks are also interested in banged up centers Pau Gasol,

Joakim, Noah and Dwight Howard. Best part? Presi- dent Obama will not refuse anyone with a pre-existing condition.
Nets
“Change” is exactly what the Nets need. After finishing with one of the worst records in the NBA (21-61), Brooklyn could use a boost of morale. The Nets can only hope for a better sea- son next year. Also, who better to spend President Obama’s post-presidential life with than his celebrity friend and former Nets owner, Jay Z? The duo met in 2008 on the campaign trail and have remained close since, and don’t you remember Beyoncé serenading the President and First Lady Michelle at their first inaugu- ration? The rapper, who still attends some games, even in- cluded Obama in a song.
Washington Wizards President Obama says he’ll stay in D.C. for the next two years, so his local team could be an option. After all, President Obama did “call”
the Wizards before the White House correspondents’ dinner. Team owner Ted Leonsis has not yet shown any interest.
L.A. Clippers
When President Obama
came into office in 2009, the Clippers were in the middle of a 19-63 season. Although it was difficult at times, the team has progressed greatly in the Obama Era. Just three sea- sons after that 08-09 season, the Clippers were back in the playoffs and haven’t missed the postseason since. I have a feel- ing Obama would resonate with the Clippers story.
Toronto Raptors
If Donald Trump is elected
president, look for President Obama to head north of the border (legally). He already has a friend in Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who, like Presi- dent Obama, is a massive sports fan. The move would be unprecedented for a U. S. pres- ident to reside abroad, but judging the current political climate anything is possible.
