Army Enlistee Earns Proficiency Award

John Legend To Keynote Black, Brown And College Bound Summit Luncheon
Private First Class Jacob Votos has been awarded the Expert Infantry- man Badge. The badge is the U. S. Army’s highest non- combat proficiency award for infantryman.
The Airman must pass sev- enteen specific infantry skills that includes rifle marksman- ship, hand grenades, antitank
weapons, first aid, military intelligence, and signal com- munications. The test con- cludes with a 12-mile road march with full combat gear.
Private First Class Votos graduated from West Port High School, in Ocala. He earned his Associate’s de- gree in 2014 from the Univer- sity of South Florida.
The Black, Brown & College Bound Steering Committee recently announced that the 2017 Signature Luncheon Keynote Speaker is critically- acclaimed, multi-award-win- ning, singer-songwriter and social activist, John Legend.
The 11th annual summit luncheon will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017, 12:30 p. m.
Registration is open and all are encouraged to register early for the Summit. Tickets for the event are $1,250.00 per table, or $125.00 individu- ally.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he studied English and African- American literature, Legend has worked throughout his ca- reer to make a difference in the lives of others.

Dr. Sylvia Marion Car- ley is the founder and con- vener of the Black, Brown & College Bound Summit. She retired from Hillsborough Community College as the campus president at the Ybor City Campus.
Over the years, she served the college as a faculty mem- ber and dean. In her capacity as Vice President of Education & Student Development, she focused on student success, retention, persistence, and graduation. By means of the Summit, she remains dedi- cated to the mission of serving students in an effort to en- hance their academic and so- cial development.
Featured speakers for the Summit are:
John Quiñones has emerged as one of the most in- spiring keynotes in the speak- ing world today. A lifetime of “never taking no for an an- swer” took Quiñones from migrant farm work and poverty to more than 30 years at ABC News and the anchor desk at 20/20 and Primetime.
Charles F. Coleman Jr., Esq. is a seasoned civil rights attorney and legal analyst who has quickly emerged as one of the newest and strongest voices in the conversation on race, law, culture, politics, and civil rights.
Dr. Carlos Muñoz, Jr. is scholar-activist who has been a central figure in the strug- gles for civil and human rights, social and economic justice, and peace in the United States and abroad since he was a student activist in the 1960s. He played a
prominent leadership role as a founder of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. Luis Ponjuan is an Associate Professor in Higher Education Administration in the Department of Educa- tional Administration and Human Resource Develop- ment at Texas A&M Univer- sity.
Tampa Native Assigned To Naval Construction Battalion
Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Gillilan is a Tampa native who graduated from Wiregrass High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and currently serves as an Equipment Op- erator.
