Woman Close To Dr. And Mrs. King To Speak
In Tampa Thursday
A woman who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, will be in Tampa on Thursday.

Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foun- dation, Inc. and Creator and Executive Producer of the Foundation’s Trumpet Awards, we be speaking on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 2 p. m. The event will be at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Pub- lic Library, 1505 N. Nebraska Ave.
The Trumpet Awards is a prestigious event highlighting African American accom- plishments and contribu- tions. Initiated in 1993 by Turner Broadcasting, the Trumpet Awards has been televised annually and dis- tributed internationally to over 185 countries around the world.
Ms. Clayton began her television career in 1967 and became the south’s first Black person to have her own tele- vision show, The Xernona Clayton Show, which aired on a CBS affiliate in Atlanta.
Ms. Clayton moved to Atlanta in 1965, where she ac- cepted a position with the Southern Christian Leader- ship Conference and worked closely with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ms. Clayton also traveled extensively with Mrs. Coretta Scott King on her

nationwide concert tours. Along with her other hon- ors, Ms. Clayton has re- ceived the first Coretta Scott King Award from the SCLC (Southern Christian Leader- ship Conference), the Madam C. J. Walker Award from EBONY’S Outstanding Women in Marketing and Communications, and the Outstanding Corporate Pro- fessional Award from the PowerNetworking Family. The Atlanta City Council hon- ored her by naming a street and a park in downtown At-
lanta.
In private life, she is mar-
ried to Judge Paul L. Brady. She is a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, for- merly co-pastored by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
16-Year-Old High Schooler Seeks Community’s Help To Raise $3,000

A 16-year-old high school is reaching out to the com- munity to help him with his interest in sports.
Jeremiah Nichols is a junior at Jesuit High School. As a member of The Skills Center Elite Basketball Team, Jeremiah has an op- portunity to become a mem- ber of the traveling basketball team. His goal is to raise at least $3,000 to take care of necessities for the trip.
The Skills Center focuses on academics, life skills and athletics. The Center’s web- site says, “Creating Academ- ics & Leadership Success through the Power of Sports.”
As a member of the trav- eling basketball team, Jere- miah has an opportunity to visit many states to compete in big tournaments with other young people. This

year it’s the NCAA approved Live Periods Tournaments. The first trip is slated for April 17.
He has played on this team for the past 6 years, and this will be his final year of playing competitive bas- ketball before heading off to college. The youngsters will have an opportunity to play in front of many college coaches and scouts.
At Jesuit, Jeremiah plays on the Varsity Basket- ball Team. He is a well- rounded student as the Vice President of the Sigma Beta Club of Phi Beta Sigma Fra- ternity, Inc., Operation Up- lift Communities Youth Advisory Board Vice Presi- dent, Salesian Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year Nom- inee and a Tampa Bay Light- ning Community Hero of Tomorrow Nominee. He is a leader on and off the court.
