IRS Delaying 2021 Tax Deadline Until May 17
President Joe Biden Visits Black-Owned Business For ‘Help Is Here’ Tour
President Joe Biden visits Black-owned businesses for the ‘Help Is Here Tour”.
President Joe Biden
traveled to Pennsylvania on Wednesday and visited a small Black-owned business in the city of Chester. The stop was part of the Biden-Har- ris Administration’s “Help Is Here” tour, focusing on how the new American Rescue Plan will provide relief to help support small business own- ers.
The president spent time at Smith Flooring Inc., a small business that supplies and in- stalls flooring for clients that include schools. According to White House officials, revenue at Smith Flooring dipped 20 percent in 2020. The opera- tion survived in part thanks to the federal Paycheck Protec- tion Program (PPP) loans, de- signed to help businesses keep their workforce employed dur- ing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some 400,000 small busi- nesses have closed and mil-
lions more are hanging by a thread. The American Rescue Plan will provide emergency grants, lending, and invest- ment to small businesses so they can rehire and retain workers, and purchase the health and sanitation equip- ment necessary to keep work. ers safe.
“This is a great outfit. This is a union shop,” said Biden during his visit, noting that he grew up near Chester, which has a Black mayor and about 33,000 residents. He praised the operation as one where workers “can make a living wage, a decent wage.”
Co-owned by Kristin and James Smith, Smith Floor- ing currently has 12 employees and as many as 24 workers during peak times. They re- ceived the original installment of PPP in April 2020, and a second installment this month, according to officials.
The Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday that it is delaying the April 15 tax filing deadline to May 17 amid the chaotic filing season which has resulted in numer- ous pandemic-related tax changes.
The Treasury Department and the IRS said “the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically ex- tended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021.” The exten- sion will happen automati- cally, and individual
taxpayers do not need to file any forms to qualify for the extension.
Per CBS News, the extra time applies to individual
taxpayers, including those who pay self-employment taxes, such as sole propri- etors and gig-economy work- ers, the IRS said.
“Individual taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021, with- out penalties and interest, re- gardless of the amount owed,” the IRS said.
These changes don’t apply to state tax returns and pay- ments that are still due on April 15, 2021, the IRS said.
House Aides Prep $3 Trillion Jobs Package For Biden
White House advisers are expected to present a two- part, $3 trillion jobs and in- frastructure proposal to President Joe Biden as soon as this week, according to two people familiar with the plan.
The proposal, which Biden's top advisers have been deliberating over for weeks, would be segmented into two separate parts -- one focused on infrastructure and clean energy, and a second focused on what's being termed the "care economy" with a focus zeroed in on key domestic economic issues.
In full, it would mark a sweeping move toward enact- ing the key elements of the

"jobs" agenda that Biden laid out in large part during his campaign for president,
with a suite of potential tax increases on corporations and the wealthy as options to finance any longer-term spending in the final pro- posal.
The proposal was first re- ported by The New York Times.
White House officials stressed that no final deci- sions about the final path for- ward have been made at this point. Biden still has to re- view the proposals and plans to consult heavily with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the scale and legislative sequencing of the next key pillar of his agenda.
