Attorney To Seek State House District 61 Seat
A Tampa attorney recently announced her intentions to run for a state office. The po- sition is being vacated by At- torney Sean Shaw, who is running for Attorney General.
Attorney Karen Skyers
is a former Public Defender and Public Advocate.
“The people of District 61 need a Representative who knows the ropes, who under- stands, who understands the political games that can make or break a water project, com- munity center, or safety im- provements in a neighborhood. Our commu- nity needs someone who isn’t afraid to stand up and speak out because that’s what I’ve been doing all along. I know how to deliver results,” she said.
A native of New York City, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy and her Juris Doctorate from Florida A & M University, College of Law.
Her record of public ser- vice reflects her work as a Child Protective Investigator, a Legislative Aide to State Senator Arthenia Joyner, and Assistant Public Defender in Hillsborough County.

as an Attorney in the Govern- mental Law and Lobbying Practice of statewide law firm, Becker & Poliakoff.
She further said, “I under- stand issues that matter to people of color, no matter their shade of Black or brown, and what I’ve learned is that some needs are universal: good jobs, affordable health- care, safe and high quality schools, thriving communities -- everyone of us wants that. And that’s why I’m running.”
Attorney Skyers said she plans to hold gatherings across the district to hear from residents about their vi- sion for the future and to share her ideas and plans.
Retired Educator To Run For School Board Seat

For more than 40 years, Henry Washing- ton served as an educator for the children of the Hillsborough County School District. Now, Washington is preparing to enter the next phase of his life.
He recently announced plans to seek the District 6 Seat on the Hillsborough County School Board. The seat is currently held by April Griffin, who announced last year that she would not seek re-election.
Washington will kick off his candidacy on Saturday, April 14th, at 2 p.m. The event will be held at Big John’s Barbecue, 5707 N. 40th Street, Tampa, FL 33610.
A product of the Hillsborough County Pub- lic School District, Washington earned the nickname “Shake” as a athlete. He was quar- terback and co-captain of the Middleton High School football team. Washington was also a standout basketball player for the school.
After graduating from high school in 1968, Washington received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southwest Louisiana.
He returned to Tampa in 1976, and launched a career that spanned 42 years as an educator. During his career, Washington taught Physical Education, Driver’s Education, and served as Coach for girls and boys basket- ball teams, being named as “Coach of the Year” in basketball.
He rose through the ranks of the School District, being appointed as Assistant Principal for Student Affairs at Chamberlain High School, He later became principal at Chamber- lain High School.

... To Run For Hillsborough County School Board
The School District built a new high school in East Tampa. It was given the name of Mid- dleton High School that closed in 1971. Wash- ington was named as its first principal and opened the new school, which was located a few blocks from the original school, in August 2002.
After serving three years as Principal, he was appointed Area Director for Area IV Schools. He retired after 42 years of distin- guished service to Hillsborough County on July 1, 2017.
Washington is married to Mrs. Cheryl Byrd Washington and is the father of two adult children, Henry Washington, Jr., and Dr. JaMia Washington. The family wor- ships at Allen Temple A. M. E. Church.
