BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Nathan Mitchell is a nominee for the ‘Outstanding Jazz Album’ Award
Nathan Mitchell is one of 5 per- sons who are nominees for the “Out- standing Jazz Album” award when the 51st NAACP Image Awards will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2020, 8 p. m., on BET.
Many in the Bay Area may re- member Mitchell from his days in Tampa as a gospel musician. He played for several churches in the area, as he was trained on several in- struments.
Apostle James Howell and Pastor Marzetta Howell are among those who recall Mitchell as he was one of the musicians at their church – Cathedral of Faith.
Mitchell, 44, was nominated for
his current musical release, Soul- mate, a 10-song compiliation dedi- cated to his wife, who passed away from a rare cancer on September 4, 2010. Soulmate was released on Sep- tember 4, 2019.
According to his press release, after the death of his wife, Mitchell was left to raise two children – 8- year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.
After an 8-month haitus from
music, Mitchell was asked to play for two jazz artists as a substitute key- boardist. This experience brought back his interest in music again. With the support of family, he has been able to tour the world with many top award winning artists.
In 2018, Mitchell started his own record label, ENM Music Group, and released his first national single – In- spiration – which made it to the Bill- board charts at #22.
Soulmate, featuring the hit single, Swing City, is holding the #7 spot on the Billboard and Smooth Hazz Net- work charts, and has secured his first #1 on the Mediabase Smooth Jazz charts.
The Howells and many other Bay Area residents will be watching and waiting for Mitchell to walk on the stage to accept the Image Award. Mitchell says, however, “Regardless of the outcome, just being considered has given me the accomplishment of
being a winner.”

The home of Josiah Henson has been restored and added to the National Register of Historic Places in North Bethesda, Maryland. It is believed that the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin was inspired by Henson’s life.
