If you are one of those peo- ple who can honestly say that they are involved in a relationship, where the love is equally reciprocated, con- sider yourself blessed. I say this because, more often than not, that is seldom the case. In most couplings there usually exists an unbalance where one half tends to be more heavily invested in the companionship than the other. They care more, do more and are more willing to sacrifice of themselves in order for things to work.
To that individual, who is totally committed to his or her significant other, there is really no need for a special occasion like Valentine's Day for them to put on a display of their affection. This is mainly due to the fact that people, who sincerely care about the well being of their partners, regularly engage in activities that showcase their affection because bringing daily joy to the person closest to their heart allows them to also feel happiness inside.
While there's nothing wrong with participating in Valentine's Day for those who exchange tokens of apprecia- tion throughout the year, to me, the holiday comes off as a convenient opportunity for the individuals who exist on
the other side of the spec- trum.... those who don't feel as strongly about the person who they're with and who need the spectacle of superfi- cial, flamboyant Valentine's Day gifts to make up for their emotional disconnectedness.
These are the kind of peo- ple who make Valentine's Day extremely profitable for the greeting card, jewelry, flower and candy industries. Though businesses that sell these products claim to cater to the season of love, in actu- ality, feelings like guilt, self- serving thirstiness and the fear of loss are far more re- sponsible for the filling of their coffers.
The thing is, if you're truly in love with someone, you don't need a date designated on the calendar to show that person how you feel. In fact, if you express the same senti- mental gestures on any other day of the year, you may be surprised to find out how much more meaningful your generosity and acknowledge- ment is to the person doing the receiving.
