St. Petersburg AKA Sorority Chapter Installs New President
Position
ST. PETERSBURG, FL- Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorpo- rated, Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter, recently passed the leadership torch to its newly elected president Lisa L. Brody, Esquire. The instal- lation ceremony was wit- nessed by an overflow crowd of members during the chap- ter’s December meeting.
Lisa L. Brody began her leadership journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as an undergraduate, more than 27 years ago at the University of Oregon. In 1996, along with several women in leadership, Brody successfully char- tered Upsilon Gamma Omega in Eugene, Oregon.
“It is my honor to serve as President of the Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Our Chapter is comprised of over 100 women committed to making a meaningful im- pact within our community and I am humbled to serve in this role that has included many trailblazing women, such as the late Lena Brown, Vivian Rouson, Lounell Britt and Myrtle Williams. I look forward to building upon the legacy left by these women and other leaders of our illustrious sorority,” said Atty. Brody.

“Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service” is the chosen theme of Dr. Glenda Glover, Interna- tional President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incor- porated, for her 2018-2022 term. To sustain the dy- namism of the 111-year old sisterhood, Dr. Glover has appointed the AKA Classic Leadership Team to assist in planning and policy develop- ment. Among those tapped to join the team is Sonja W. Garcia.
Mrs. Garcia has ac- cepted the position of Chair- man of the International Archives Committee. In this leadership role she serves as advisor to the sorority in the development and implemen- tation of policy for archival records. She has responsi- bility for serving as custo- dian of the sorority’s print and non-print material housed at the Moorland-Sp- ingarn Research Center on the campus of Howard Uni- versity (Washington, DC) and in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate office (Chicago, IL).
Upon reflection of the ap- pointment, Mrs. Garcia shared, “It is my great honor to be entrusted with preserv- ing the heritage of this pio- neering organization for the inspiration, education and advancement of generations of scholars, community

builders and seekers of knowledge.”
Assisting Chairman Garcia in executing these responsibilities is an Inter- national Archives Commit- tee comprised of a representative from each of the sorority’s ten (10) geo- graphical regions. This team of diverse achievers includes educators, attorneys, an archivist, philanthropists, social service, and medical personnel.
Mrs. Garcia is a retired university librarian, a former South Atlantic Regional Di- rector of the sorority, and the immediate past presi- dent of Alpha Alpha Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incor- porated.

Oregon. She also attained the Certificate of Non-profit Management and Leadership in 2009 at the University of Tampa. Atty. Brody is cur- rently the managing attorney at the St. Petersburg offices of Bay Area Legal Services, Inc.
Attorney Brody previ- ously served the Zeta Upsilon Omega chapter in various leadership roles including vice president, program chairman, risk management chairman, Ivy Leaf reporter, and parliamentarian. She is married to Attorney Carl Brody and has two children.
Under the leadership of the sorority’s international president Dr. Glenda Baskins Glover, Brody will serve a two-year term and guide the local chapter in implementing a full spec- trum of new program initia- tives themed, “Exemplifying Excel-

On Saturday, February 16, 2019, the Polk County Alumni Chapter of Florida A&M University will be hosting the Annual Scholarship Gala. The guest speaker will be the Mayor for the City of Lakeland, Florida, Mr. Bill Mutz.
