Former Police Chief Wins Mayoral Seat

On Tuesday, the political season for the City of Tampa came to an end. Voters selected the new Mayor as well as three City Council members during the runoff election.
Voters selected former Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor as the in- coming Mayor for the City of Tampa.
Castor won in a landslide victory of 73.11% or 38,854 votes. David Straz, her opponent in the runoff election, captured 26.89% or 14,290 votes.
A Tampa native, Castor gradu- ated from the University of Tampa. She became a member of the Tampa Police Department at the age of 24. She was appointed as Chief of Police in 2009. She retired in 2015 after 31 years of service.

Castor became a first-time politician when she threw her hat into the ring to run for Mayor in 2019. She was one of seven candi- dates.
In the March 5th Election, she captured the majority of votes, but not enough to prevent a runoff against Tampa businessman David Straz.
On April 23rd, Castor won 73.11% of the votes against Straz in the runoff election.
Castor replaces current Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who must vacate the seat because of term limits. He supported her during the election.
Her opponent in the race, David Straz, has pledged to support her.
Mayor-Elect Castor will be ad- ministered the Oath Of Office in a ceremony at Armature Works at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, May 1st.
