Clergy Remembers Legacy His Father Left Behind
CHARLES DAVIS Superintendent, College Hill Church Of God In Christ
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
When we think of loved ones who have passed, we often think of the person and the legacy left behind. And, we realize that there are some things that can’t be translated into words.
And that is the case with Charles Davis, Superinten- dent of College Hill Church Of God In Christ. Recently, Su- perintendent Davis talked about his own father, the late Bishop W. E. Davis, during a conversation about Father’s Day.
He spoke about standing in the shadow of a community leader. “My father was more than I will ever be. He was a man who never sought to be seen and he was not flirtatious in his dealings. He was a very wise man, he was a family man, and he loved people.
“He did so many things to help other people that have never been talked about. As a Christian, he laid a solid foun- dation for me and many other young men to build on,” he said.
Bishop Davis led the con- gregation of the College Hill
BISHOP W. E. DAVIS
Church Of God In Christ from 1963 until his death in 1997. Upon his death at the age of 95, Superintendent Davis became the Senior Pastor at the Church.
Superintendent Davis
said he was about 25 years of age before he became serious in his religious quest. “The spirit had been on me since I was a young boy, but I had to sow my oats and find out that was not the way to go.”
About 3 or 4 years later, he recalls giving in to the call of the Holy Spirit. And he had the opportunity to realize some- thing about his father. “He was my solid example of what a preacher is, ought to be, and should be.”
Superintendent Davis
also talked about the effect his father’s teachings had on other young men. “My father was a phenomenal minister and pas- tor.”
Although he says he will never be the man his father was, he, too, is leaving a legacy behind. He is carrying on the traditions that began with his father and trying to improve the lives of the people in his community.
Truthfulness At Center Of Trump-Comey Controversy
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In recent weeks, the pub- lic’s attention has been drawn to private conversations be- tween President Donald Trump and former F. B. I. Di- rector James Comey. Each has accused the other of un- truthfulness.
Some Sentinel readers shared their opinions on the believability of the comments the men have made in public. The following are their an- swers to the question, “The question is: “Who is lying, President Donald Trump or former F.B.I. Director James Comey?”
Attorney Clinton Paris
said, “Unfortu-
nately, truth,
candor, and
honesty va-
cated Washing-
ton D.C., long
before Donald Trump ar- rived and before President Bill Clinton lied about his af- fair, President Bush lied about not raising taxes, and President Ronald Reagan lied about the Iran Contra Arms deal.
“I have no reason to believe that President Trump and former Director Comey are doing anything but serving their own interests. Nothing
that they are disputing will im- prove the job market, health insurance, tax reform or stop terrorism.
“Regardless of whether President Trump or Comey is lying, it’s the United States and the American peo- ple that are suffering while this sordid mess plays out. Hope- fully, our government will get back to working on behalf of the people sooner than later.”
Dr. Samuel Wright said, “I don't trust President
Trump at
all. Everything
he says is sus-
pect. Of
course, I am not privy to all de- tails concerning this matter for I have not been that attentive. Former FBI Director James Comey can't be trusted either; each of them has serious is- sues.”
Rev. Karen Jackson Sims said, “Check who is sitting in the hot seat ...that would be liar, liar pants on
fire #45.”
Billy Wheeler said,
“There's an old saying, ‘Past performance is generally the best predictor
of future behavior.’ Consider- ing 45’s personal history and political campaign were built on lies; I'll take, ‘Trump is the liar for $200, Alex."
Dr. George Foxx said, “Donald
Trump went
on the offensive
against his for-
mer FBI Direc-
tor James
Comey, accusing him of lying under oath when he testified earlier that the President asked him to drop an investigation into a key aide.
“I personally do not care for either, but sources have said that President Trump has lied more than 640 times since taking office. Mr. Comey has testified under oath, now it will be President Trump’s turn since he said he would testify 100 percent.
“President Trump is a serious makeover of Richard Nixon and time will be the judge as the holder of the truth; especially, investigation into Michael Flynn, who was fired as National Security Ad- viser for lying about the nature of meetings with Russian offi- cials.”
Mrs. Bon- nye Crews said, “Trump is lying. It's what he does.”
