HABSE To Host 25th Annual African American Achievers Awards Ceremony
2016 STUDENT HABSE AWARD WINNERS

On Friday, April 28th, the Hillsborough Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE) will host its yearly scholarship program. The or- ganization is celebrating its Twenty-Fifth Annual African
American Achievers Awards Ceremony.
The event will take place at Gaither High School, 16200 N. Dale Mabry High-
way, beginning at 7 p.m. Stu- dent honorees are asked to arrive at 6 p.m.
The award recipients for the 2016-2017 school year have been selected. The
awards presented to those students will range from book stipends to scholar- ships. They will be presented to students of African Amer- ican descent with a grade
point average of 3.0 or higher. All students invited to attend the event have an opportunity to apply for the book stipend scholarship award.
The event was initially slated to be held at the fair- grounds. However, it has been relocated and Ms. Mary Dance, President of HABSE is asking students to bring one guest because of the limited space.
The National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) came about in No- vember 1970, when a group of educators shared their concerns about education during a meeting in Chicago, Illinois. As a result, the Black School Superintendents was created.
Three years later, the or- ganization extended mem- bership opportunities to others and it became the Na- tional Alliance of Black School Educators Commis- sion. Today, there are chap- ters in every state, including several in Florida.
In September 1993, 35 educators united and founded the Hillsborough Alliance of Black School Ed- ucators, a local affiliate of the National Alliance of Black School Educators.
In November 2016, the Tampa Chapter of HABSE hosted the National Confer- ence.
