BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
During a five-day pe- riod, a group of young artists visited college cam- puses in five Florida cities. Their purpose was to in- spire and entertain young ladies on those campuses.
The group included SDOT Presents Promoter Sean Wood, recording artist June’s Diary, of BET’s ‘Chasing Des- tiny,’ Heffe Marciano, an artist out of Toledo, Ohio, and St. Petersburg’s own Project Youngin.
The tour was called,
“The Future Is Now.”
The tour kicked off in Miami on April 5th. While visiting the city, the group conducted radio interviews and used Social Media to promote the event.
The young ladies also appeared in Daytona, where they visited the cam- pus of Bethune-Cookman University and the Univer- sity of South Florida in Tampa. While visiting Tampa, and with the assis- tance of Ms. Jonilda Francois, they had the opportunity to meet with many students on the cam- pus and they connected with Deprina Godboldo, a Radio Personal Student. June’s Diary members were also interviewed on Bulls Radio.
After leaving Tampa, the young ladies brought
the tour to a close on April 15th in Tallahassee. While in Tallahassee, they visited Florida State University and Florida A & M Univer- sity.
Ms. Francois said, “Ms. Ivy Box, CEO of the company, connected me with local promoter Sean Wood, and helped to pro- mote this girl group known as June’s Diary.
A recent graduate of the University of South Florida, Ms. Francois was at home at the Univer- sity of South Florida. Her familiarity with the campus and many members of the student body helped her to promote the show using word-of-mouth and Social Media.
One of those responsi- ble for promoting the young ladies is Ms. Fran- cois, who serves as the Marketing Management for “Beyond the Box Unlim- ited.” Other duties include working in entertainment, marketing and consulting for the trans-media busi- ness.
Wood said, “The pur- pose of the tour was to in- spire students to get pushing and chasing their dreams like the artists on the tour have been doing.
“The artists had a great time interacting and hang- ing out with the students as well as sharing and hearing stories about the ups and downs of chasing their
dreams.”
He further said, the tour
was inspiring for all of the artists as well as rewarding for them to realize just how many people share their dreams as well as some of their struggles.
The young ladies were formed in February 2016 by Ms. Kelly Rowland, formerly of Destiny’s Child and Choreographer and Director Frank Gat- son, Jr., on the BET real- ity television docu series, Chasing Destiny. Ms. Rowland said she saw the need for an all-girl group because there was only one in existence at the time.
The name June’s Diary was chosen because although the girls were united in February, it was- n’t until June that they bonded. The second half of the name came about as they tell their story, writing a new page each day.
Members of June’s Diary are: Kristal Lyn- driette Smith, Ashly Williams, Brienna De- Vlugt, Gabrielle “Gabby” Carreiro and Shyann Roberts.
They released their song L.A.N.C.E. on iTunes and signed a deal with Epic Records.
The group has also sup- ported R. Kelly as an opening act with his After Party Tour, The Buffet Tour, and 12 Nights of Christmas Tour.
