Bridges Over Troubled Waters Board Announces Scholarship Recipients
For the fourth consecutive year, the Bridges Over Trou- bled Waters Board is proud to announce its annual schol- arship recipients. The 2019 Al Dixon Scholarship first- place award, in the amount of $1,000.00, was presented to Gerard Murray. The second-place award of $500.00 was presented to Charles Hammond, III.
Both of these exemplary young men have long-stand- ing records of noteworthy achievements educationally, within the community and in their churches.
Gerard Murray, a 2019 graduate of Brandon High School, is currently en- rolled at Valencia College, where he plans to pursue a degree in Journalism. At Brandon High he was a member of the National Thespian Honor Society and has various sketches and scripts to his credit.
He was voted the school’s 2019 Best Actor of the Year. Gerard partici- pated in ROTC and was a member of the Gentleman’s Club. Volunteering for Feed- ing Tampa Bay’s Trinity Café and with the Pleasant Chapel AME Church Food Pantry

has provided opportunities for him to give back to the community. As a member of Pleasant Chapel AME Church, he is active in the Sons of Allen and the Young People’s Division (YPD).
Charles Hammond, III, is enrolled at Hillsbor- ough Community College and aspires to be an educa- tor. In his words, “A degree in Education will allow me the same opportunities to help shape and mold the next generation ... just as my teachers did with me.”

ate of Plant High School, where he was in the March- ing Band, Student Govern-
ment Association (SGA), Del Phi Service Club and the Fel- lowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Service Club. He earned Honor Cords for the Music Honor Society and the SGA.
A member of Mt. Olive AME Church, he is active in the Young People’s Division and was named the 2016 YPD’er of the Year. His char- itable work includes feeding the homeless at the Salvation Army, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots and the Breast Cancer Walk.
Guidelines for next year’s scholarships will be available in January 2020. The deadline for receipt of applications is June 1, 2020. Interested students are en-
couraged to contact the Scholarship Chairperson, Mary Darby at (813) 620- 0490, or the Board Presi- dent, Irving Ward at (813) 361-8893. Scholarship win- ners will be announced in August 2020.
One hundred percent of tax-deductible donations are applied toward the scholar- ship fund. Aspiring youth, like Gerard and Charles, are the inspiration and impe- tus behind this worthwhile effort.
