Supervisor Of County’s Health Services Spearheads Effort To ‘Bring
Home Gold’ For Public Schools
Hillsborough County Pub- lic Schools recently achieved Gold Status as one of Florida’s Healthy School Districts. The award, an initiative from the Florida Department of Educa- tion in conjunction with the Florida Department of Health, rates the policies and processes of school districts in a number of areas including physical education, employee wellness, and healthy school environment.
The district received an outstanding score of 100% for its policies and processes in the areas of Physical Educa- tion, Healthy School Environ- ment, Employee Wellness, and Counseling, Psychological and Social Services. Only eight school districts in Florida achieved this level.
Dr. Maria Russ, the dis- trict’s Supervisor of Health Services, spearheaded the ef- fort to submit the self-assess-

ment to be considered for this award. “It was a lot of work,” Dr. Russ said. “But we are committed to the health of the whole child and this was a way to demonstrate that.”
School Board member Lynn Gray agrees, and is ex- cited the district accepted the
challenge and will be rewarded for its efforts. “I think this is wonderful,” Gray said. “A healthy body is essential to a healthy mind which increases student achievement.”
To qualify, school district representatives were required to fill out the Florida Healthy School District Self-Assess- ment. The assessment was de- veloped by the Florida Coordinated School Health Partnership and was designed as a way to celebrate the achievements of school dis- tricts that excel in areas related to the physical, mental and so- cial health of staff and stu- dents.
The gold status recognition is valid from May 2017 until April 2019.
