Donald Trump’s ‘Covfefe’ Tweet Has World Going Crazy
Prince Harry Welcomes Former Pres. Barack Obama To The Palace
Prince Harry and former president Barack Obama at the palace on Mr. Obama’s last stop in Europe.
Prince Harry welcomed former president Barack Obama at Kensington Palace in London on Saturday dur- ing the Mr. Obama’s latest stop in Europe.
"They discussed a range of shared interests including support for veterans, mental health, conservation, empow- ering young people and the work of their respective foun- dations," Kensington Palace said in a statement.
They also talked about the terrorist attack in Manches- ter, with Mr. Obama offer- ing his condolences to the victims and support for those recovering from injuries, the statement said.
The terrorist bombing in Manchester killed 22 people and injured dozens after a concert featuring American singer Ariana Grande.
Before his London visit, Obama played golf in Scot- land and stopped in Berlin, where he delivered a poignant message to Manchester alongside German Chancel- lor Angela Merkel and Archbishop of Canter- bury Justin Welby.
"As the father of two daughters, I am heartbroken by the extraordinary tragedy that has occurred in Man- chester," Obama said in a video posted by Merkel's of- fice.
President Trump’s Revised Budget Cuts Deeply Into HBCU Funding
President Trump met with HBCU leaders last February promising his support. However, his revised budget indicates otherwise.
A midnight tweet from Donald Trump has Twitter going absolutely NUTS! At 12:06 a.m. on May 31, the president tweeted about ‘neg- ative press covfefe,’ and peo- ple cannot stop making fun of his typo.
“Despite the negative press covfefe,” Trump, 70, tweeted in the middle of the night, the tweet ended there, seemingly in the middle of a thought, and has since been deleted, but it was up long enough for people to take no- tice and start poking fun at the POTUS.
It seems like ‘covfefe’ was
President Trump tweet- ing.
just a typo for ‘coverage’, but President Trump took to Twitter around 6:00 a.m. to reveal that might not be the case.
“Who can figure out the true meaning of “covfefe” ???” he wrote. “Enjoy!”
In a statement, The United Negro College Fund CEO said, “the proposed budget (revised by President Donald Trump) would cut federal aid lifelines that thousands of HBCU students depend on to attend college.”
The budget item came after Mr. Trump told dozens of HBCU presidents back in Feb- ruary that they had his “unwa- vering support."
What’s the problem with the budget and HBCUs?
HBCUs are in bad need of money. Morehouse has an en- dowment of about $130 mil- lion; Bethune-Cookman’s endowment is about $55 mil- lion. To contrast, Harvard has an endowment of $37.6 billion and MIT’s endowment is $13 billion.
The federal government, for almost the last 30 years, has had a program to help in- crease the endowments of schools that could use a little boost — many HBCUs have re- ceived funding from this pro- gram; however, the Trump budget does not allocate any funds for it, so those endow- ments expecting a boost can forget about it.
Many HBCUs, need infra- structure help. One way schools got the money they
needed was through the Na- tional Parks Service, by regis- tering as places of historic import. That option’s gone now too.
If you’re a work study stu- dent, well, you’re not in luck — work study supported feder- ally funded programs were cut by 50 percent, or $500 mil- lion, if you prefer to think in dollars.
And sadly, Bethune-Cook- man’s president’s defense for inviting Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos as this year’s commencement speech —- Title III funding. Well, that’s being cut by more than $300 million.
Also taking huge hits are federal Pell Grants, Perkins loans and the public service loan forgiveness program — in fact, that last one will be phased out completely.
As with the NEA cuts, it is important to remember that the president’s budget isn’t the law of the land.
However, the White House will be pushing Congress to make it just that.
What can we do to save HBCUs: call and hand write letters, take to social media and let your U.S. senators and representa- tives know how you feel.
