The mother of murdered rapper Drakeo the Ruler wiped away tears on Monday as she spoke about her son’s “genuine heart” and senseless death in a backstage stabbing at the Once Upon a Time in L. A. music festival Saturday night.
She ran two fingers up from her collarbone to show where someone plunged a blade into her son’s neck, ending his life just as his music career was reaching its next level.
“He was hit in his neck. I
saw him when I went to the hospital. They said it’s a homi- cide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that. I had to look at him through a window,” Darry- lene Corniel told Rolling Stone in an interview at her Los Angeles residence.
“I need this to be out there. I need people to know. And I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served,” she said. “I will not rest until justice is served.”

Keona Holley, the Balti- more Police officer who was shot last week while sitting in her patrol car, has died, per CNN.
Baltimore Police Commis- sioner Michael Harrison said in a Thursday Facebook statement that she was taken off of life support, and that her health had “been deteriorating over the last couple of days and her family, in consultation with her doctors, has had to make the most difficult deci- sion.”
“Our prayers are with Offi-

cer Holley’s family and loved ones, co-workers and the en- tire community,” Harrison
said. “I thank her and the en- tire BPD community for their commitment, service and sac- rifice. We mourn Officer Holley’s death together and we will heal together.”
Holley was shot on Dec. 16, when somebody walked up to the vehicle and before she ac- celerated her car and crashed. Elliot Knox, 31, and Travon Shaw, 32, have since been charged with attempted mur- der, as well as the murder of Justin Johnson who was shot afterward. Authorities say they confessed to the crime.
The U. S. S. Milwaukee has been forced to drop its anchor in Guantánamo Bay after a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew. The battle ship was trav- eling through the Caribbean on a mission to combat drug traf- ficking.
The New York Times reports that at least 100 sailors as well as a helicopter crew and Coast Guard unit were onboard, and entirely vaccinated, when the ship set sail from Florida last week. The Milwaukee was only expecting to port briefly in
Cuba for provisions, but will now remain docked as the out- break is contained.
The Times reports that no one from the ship has been allowed to leave the ship and surround- ing pier so as to protect those living on the base. Commander Kate Meadows said that de- spite the disappointing change of plans, the crew had a so- cially-distanced, open-air Christmas service on the pier and that “the chefs onboard are making a special Christmas meal today for everyone.”
A Google office search for Black women workers is start- ing to display some slim re- sults. NBC News reports that in 2020, Black + female identi- fying employees left the com- pany at the second highest rate of any other racial-gender group, following only that of Native + female identifying in- dividuals. California’s civil rights regulator has begun conducting an investigation into the treatment of Google’s Black women employees after several complaints of discrim- inatory practices, and isolated incidents of harassment were made.
At the California Depart- ment of Fair Employment and

Housing (DFEH), analysts and attorneys have conducted on- going interviews among Black women who’ve been employed by Alphabet Inc., Google’s par- ent company. Emails obtained reveal that participants were questioned (anonymously for their protection), in regards to their experiences around the
alleged harassment and dis- crimination. Some of the inter- views were conducted as recently as last month.
Despite Black women leav- ing the company in droves, Google reports that 2020 was their highest year so far for hir- ing what they call “Black +” workers, which include Black and multi-racial individuals.
“Our goal is to ensure that every employee experiences Google as an inclusive work- place,” stated a representative. “We’ll continue to focus on this important work and thor- oughly investigate any con- cerns, to make sure our workplace is representative and equitable.”
