Giving A Child Hope with A Second Wish
Demetrius Cameron Lee Smith was diagnosed at 2-1/2 years old, with an ependymoma brain tumor.
“An ependymoma brain tumor is a malignant primary brain tumor that usually devel- ops in the lining of the ventri- cles, are the third most common type of brain tumor in children and account for 6-12% of brain tumors in children less than 18 years of age, but 30% of brain tumors in children less than 3 years of age.” (childhoodbrain- tumor. org, 2015)
“Cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among children under the age of 15 in the United States.” (fastcure.org, 2015)
Throughout his life, Demetrius had many surger-
ies, rounds of chemotherapy, and radiation. At the age of five, he had a surgery to remove a second tumor which had grown on his spinal cord. The surgery caused Demetrius limited mo- bility from the waist down.
He was granted his wish of having his own piano at the age of five from Make-A-Wish. The tumor however, recurred on Demetrius’ brain stem in 2008 and he continued chemotherapy until his doctors said there was no more anyone could do.
Demetrius wanted a sec- ond wish of a train ride, a visit to Atlanta, Georgia to see his 88- year-old great-grandmother, and a trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
Because of his medical con- dition, Demetrius would have had to fly to several of the desti- nations. The family reached out

to wish granting organizations across the country to assist with the trip, but was denied because he had been granted a wish at the age of five. Sadly, Demetrius passed away on May 29, 2008, with his wish un- fulfilled.
