Sheriff’s Advisory Council To Install New Officers
Tampa Housing Authority Celebrates Older Americans Month With Annual Celebration
On Tuesday, May 9th, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will host a swearing in ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m., at the Malcolm E. Beard Sheriff’s Operation Center, 2008 E. 8th Avenue.
The purpose of the cere- mony is to install the new of- ficers of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Black Advisory Council.
The newly elected officers are as follows: Todd Cole,
Sr., will serve as President; the Vice President is James Murphy. Ms. Apolonia Mendoza will fill the role of Secretary and Ms. Betty Wright was chosen as the Treasurer.
Arnold Mathews will serve as the Chaplain and El- liott Pyles is the newly elected Sergeant-At-Arms. Deputy Allison Miller will serve as the Liaison between the organization and the Ad- visory Committee.

The Tampa Housing Au- thority is celebrating Older Americans Month with this year’s national theme, “Age Out Loud.” The day includes all-inclusive health screen- ings, entertainment and more with approximately 500 local seniors expected to attend.

The Tampa Police De- partment will host their An- nual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.
The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 10th, 10:30 a.m., at One Po- lice Center, 411 N. Franklin Street.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Chief Eric Ward, along with the Tampa Police Memorial Committee, will pay tribute to all fallen offi- cers and their family mem- bers during the ceremony.
The ceremony will in- clude a 21-Gun Salute, Rid- erless Horse, Bagpipes, Taps, and a Flyover by the
Tampa Police Aviation Unit. The public is invited to join the men and women of the Tampa Police Department as they honor the fallen officers and those across the nation who lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sac- rifice. This includes the thirty-one officers from the Tampa Police Department who will be honored at the Memorial Ceremony.
Beep Kickball To Benefit Programs For Blind And Visually Impaired
Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind will host its first annual Beep Kickball Tournament event at the Community Field at George M. Steinbrenner Field, located at 1 Steinbren- ner Drive, Tampa, in support of its programs for blind and visually impaired persons. The event will be held on Sat- urday, May 20, 2017.
Beep Kickball uses beep- ing balls and two bases that beep at random. This fun sensory awareness experi- ence will begin at 10 a. m. with two teams from MetLife playing against each other and the winner challenging a team from Tampa Light- house for the Blind. Anyone with any vision must wear a blindfold!
The agency has provided comprehensive rehabilitation
programs in Hillsborough County since 1940 to provide employment opportunities, and expanded in the ’70s to include rehabilitation pro- grams for blind and visually impaired adults residing in Hillsborough County, and has provided a Transition Program for high school youth ages 13-22 years old to help prepare the teens for adulthood with an emphasis on job readiness since 2003.
