Pittsburgh Elects Its First Black Mayor
Ed Gainey will be Pittsburgh’s first Black mayor, CNN projects.
Gainey, a Democrat, bested Republican Tony Moreno, a retired Pittsburgh police of- ficer.
During the campaign, Gainey said he wanted to make Pittsburgh the country’s most “safe, affordable and diverse” city and touted police reform and affordable housing. He has represented Pittsburgh in the state legislature since 2013 and previously worked for Pitts- burgh Mayors Luke Ravenstahl and Tom Murphy.
During an exchange over mayoral efforts to tackle violence in a recent debate, Gainey em- phasized using a public health blueprint.
“The reality is, if it was that simple, it would be solved already,” Gainey said. “This is a real-life situation, and we will deal with it."

Eric Adams Elected Mayor Of New York
ERIC ADAMS
Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain and Brooklyn borough president, will be the next to lead New York City, becoming the city's sec- ond Black mayor, NBC News projects.
Adams, a Democrat, beat Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, who founded the 1970s-era anti-crime pa- trol, the Guardian Angels.
"It's official -- our five- borough, knock-every-door, reach-every-voter campaign was successful: We have won the race for Mayor of New York City!" Adams tweeted on Tuesday night. "This is my dream come true, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent the City that we all love as your Mayor-elect."
FDA Authorizes Pfizer Covid-19 Vaccine For Children Aged 5 To 11
Covid-19 vaccine devel- oped by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech for children ages 5 to 11, a significant step to- ward making the vaccine available to millions of school-age children.
Before the vaccine be- comes widely available, it will also need to be recom- mended by the Centers for Disease Control and Preven- tion. The decision on that recommendation is made after a meeting of an expert committee, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP. The CDC director must then approve ACIP’s recommendations. That committee met Tues- day, Nov. 2.
“As a mother and a physi- cian, I know that parents, caregivers, school staff, and children have been waiting for today’s authorization. Vaccinating younger children against COVID-19 will bring us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy,” said act- ing FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, in a statement. “Our comprehen- sive and rigorous evaluation of the data pertaining to the vaccine’s safety and effective- ness should help assure par- ents and guardians that this vaccine meets our high stan- dards.”
The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine for children 5
to 11 should be given as two doses three weeks apart, just like the version for older chil-
dren and adults, but uses a lower 10-microgram dose, one-third the adult dose.
