A 24-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of her infant daughter. The child died earlier this year.
According to the Lakeland Police Department, officers responded to 3215 Baird Av- enue in reference to a death investigation on May 28th. The victim was two-month old Xzayla Harris. The mother, Ms. Brittany C. Harris, re- portedly left the infant with a babysitter.
When she returned to the residence, Ms. Harris took custody of the baby and the babysitter left. A friend later checked on Ms. Harris and found her in bed with Xzayla tightly wrapped in a blanket and between Ms. Harris’ legs, police said.
The friend immediately called for help, and the infant was transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital. The infant died at the hospital.
Detectives said Ms. Har- ris reportedly admitted to being intoxicated and not having a plan to have anyone care for the infant after the

babysitter left.
The autopsy showed the
cause of death for the infant as suffocation. At the time of the death of the infant the mother’s toxicology report showed alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine in her sys- tem.
After the death of the in- fant, Ms. Harris left the state. She was located in Michigan in August, where she was staying in a homeless shelter. On November 27th, she was arrested by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Of- fice, without incident. She is being held without bond and will be extradited in the fu- ture, police said.
