Haiti And Cuba Hit By Hurricane Matthew; The Bahamas And Florida Are In The Path
Hurricane Matthew ripped through Haiti as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds on Tuesday, leaving villages flooded, roofs ripped from houses -- and a rising death roll. The country's Directorate for Civil Protection said Wednesday night the number of fatalities had doubled to 19. Matthew's destructive winds and torrential rainfall flooded the southern part of the coun- try, leaving behind devastating conditions for hundreds of thousands of residents, and medical officials concerned about an outbreak of Cholera.
Officials and observers say that some towns are almost completely destroyed and oth- ers have been cut off from communication, leaving loved ones to fear for the worst.
A spokesman for UN Secre- tary-General Ban Ki-Moon added in a statement today that at least 350,000 people need immediate assistance in Haiti, and the full extent of the hurricane's impact remains unclear.
Hurricane To Hit Eastern Florida
Hurricane Matthew will hammer parts of eastern Florida starting Thursday, and then spread up the coast of Georgia and the Carolinas Fri- day into the weekend.
As illustrated by the Na-
tional Hurricane Center's (NHC) projected path map, and also explained below, the severity of any direct impacts will depend on how close the center of Matthew moves near the coast.
An important point to make is that landfall does NOT need to take place for the worst im- pacts to come ashore. The strongest winds and most
drilling surge will come to the coast in the eyewall, which sur- rounds the eye. Landfall occurs when the calmest portion of the eye, or the center, comes ashore. Hurricane conditions could come ashore even if the center stays 20 to 30 miles off- shore.
Here is the latest on what we know about Matthew right now in terms of U.S. impacts.
