Marjorie was a persistent stalwart, educational stew- ard, and active contributor to her community and church family.
She is preceded in death by: her mother, Ida Lucille Tyson-Swift; father, William Mayes; stepfather, Alonzo Swift; grandmother, Bernice Tyson-Dukes; aunt, Marjorie Tyson Carter Williams; cousin, Rita Tyson-Seate; and special friend, Dorothy York.
Marjorie Mayes is sur- vived by: her uncle, William Watson-Tyson and wife; cousins, Robert Nelson, Jacqueline Griffin, Howard Tyson, Sr., Stephanie Burks, Portia Carrion, Chauncey Williams, William Tyson, Jr. (wife and children), Vernice Williams (husband and chil- dren), Alena Ramos (hus- band and children), Alise Tyson and child, and a host of other cousins including, Monique Griffin, Bruce Bradshaw, Veronica Kilbert, Gregory Seate, Howard Tyson, Jr., Prince Burks, Jr., Chauncey Williams, Jr., and Ulysses “Brandon” Carrion, Jr.; godchildren, Karen Hilton-Keith (Aaron Keith), and Jakino Tyson and wife, Quatoya Tyson and their children, Reagan Tyson and Rhyan Tyson; and special friends, Juanita Davis, Flora Scott, Ouida Hilton, Lucille Hatcher, Maisie Reddy and Marjorie Jefferson.

Ms. Marjorie D. Tyson Mayes, also affectionately known as, “Auntie Marge” and “Grand-Tee,” passed away peacefully in Tampa, on Friday, June 12, 2015.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 26, 2015, at 1 p. m. at St. James House of Prayer Episcopal Church, 2708 N. Central Av- enue, Tampa, 33602, with Reverend Ernestein C. Flemister, officiating. All are welcome to attend and cele- brate Marjorie Mayes’ life. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Ceme- tery.
Marjorie was born on Au- gust 19, 1939, in Daytona Beach, FL, to Ida Lucille Tyson Swift and William Mayes, but was raised in Tampa.
She was crowned as the 1st Ms. Blake of Blake High School. She went on to at- tend Florida A&M University and obtained her undergrad- uate degrees in English and Chemistry, and went on to receive her Master’s degree.
After moving back to Tampa, Marjorie began working for the School Dis- trict of Hillsborough County as a Chemistry teacher. She spent 40 years as a dedicated educator between Blake High School and Hillsborough High School.

Retired Hillsborough County educator, Ms. Mar- jorie Mayes, was found dead on Friday, June 12th at a Tampa area motel by law enforcement officials per- forming a welfare check. She was 75 years old. Ms. Mayes had been staying at the motel for two weeks due to mold from water damage in her home.
Ms. Mayes was a native of Daytona Beach, Florida, but educated in the public schools of Tampa. She was raised by her grandmother, Ms. Bernice Tyson- Dukes, and became the first reigning Miss Howard W. Blake High School.
Ms. Mayes attended Florida A&M University where she graduated with B.A. degrees in chemistry and English, and a Master’s degree in Chemistry.
She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. After graduating from college, Ms. Mayes re- turned to her alma mater
where she taught chemistry and biology. When Blake High School was down- graded to a junior high school during the 1971-1972 school year, Ms. Mayes moved on to Hillsborough High School, but still taught night adult school at Blake.
Ms. Mayes spent nearly 40 years in the school sys- tem before retiring and ded- icating her life to enlightening young people in her community, her church, and wherever her services were needed.
“Ms. Mayes was the kind of teacher you wanted at Blake if you really wanted to learn all there was to know about chemistry,” said one of her former students.
“Ms. Mayes was prompt and a very dedicated educa- tor to all. She never stooped stressing the important of education, and was always willing to go to the limit to help someone, even if it meant going out of her way.”

Her body will be lying in state from 5-8 p. m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015, at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.

Man Drowns While Playing In Pool With His Two Daughters

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies report that a man drowned Saturday morning while he was play- ing in a swimming pool with his two young daughters.
Kenson Jean Gilles, 38, was in the shallow end of the pool at Somerset Park Apart- ments at 11 a. m. playing with his two young daughters when he approached the deep end of the pool, lost his footing and went under.
He did not know how to swim, police said. Para- medics arrived and removed Gilles from the pool and

transported him to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
No funeral home has been selected at this time.
