The Men That Cook Event
Faith in Action North Lakeland - Service to the Eld- erly celebrated 13 years of service to the community with "The Men That Cook Event" on Sunday, September 25th at the Coleman-Bush Building Lake- land, Florida.

Church Hosts Youth Empowerment Saturday
On Saturday, September 17th, First Baptist Institutional Church, Reverend Dr. Alex Harper Sr., Pastor, served as host to a Youth Empowerment Saturday (YES). The theme of the event was ‘Paving a Path, Providing Options and Oppor- tunities’.
The focal population was youth who are in grades K-12. The event opened with registra- tion, breakfast and prayer. Terry Coney, Coordinator, ex- tended a warm welcome to everyone. Jacqueline Byrd, Polk County Schools Superin- tendent, served as a motiva- tional speaker to jump-start the audience.
Throughout the day, stu- dents and parents enjoyed group discussions, job exhibits, food, dance performances and self-defense demonstrations. A ‘Paving a Path’ panel made-up of several community icons an- swered questions and shared valuable information.
The panel members were: City of Lakeland Commis- sioner Phillip Walker, Owner/Agency Principal All- state Insurance; Gow Fields,
President/CEO Fields & Com- pany Insurance & Financial Group; Kay Fields, Presi- dent/CEO Girls Inc. of Lake- land; Mark Farrington, City of Lakeland Director of Human Resources & Civil Service; Reginald Artis, Sr., Presi- dent/CEO Artis Limited, Inc.; and Dell Quary, Polk County Schools Grants Developer.
Presentations were given by DeAvbrey Divine (It’s All About Books); Tamika Perkins (All About Careers); and Yvonne McShay (Proper Etiquette).
The closing sessions offered opportunity for Talk it Out, Guys! and Talk it Out, Girls!. Speakers for the guys were: James Bennett Jr., Lieu- tenant Marvin Tarver, Al- bert Cummings III, Daryl Ash, and Ashley Troutman. And for the girls: Tonia Old- ham, Jeanine Robinson- Kyle, Katrena White, Chandra Arthur, Katrina Lunsford, and Amanda Dillington.
