Readers Respond To Bombing Of Syria
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Last Tuesday, Syria launched a chemical attack that left 85 people dead and hundreds injured. In re- sponse, President Donald Trump authorized a missile attack on the Shayrat Air Force Base in West Syria, from which the attacks were launched on Friday and Sat- urday.
The U. S. government said about 20 airplanes were destroyed by the air strike on the Shayrat Base.
The question of the week asked of Sentinel readers is: “How Do You Feel About President Trump Bomb- ing Syria?” Their answers are as follows:
Steve Marshall said, “It needed to be done to send a message to Syria. However, I felt that he (President Trump) did it to upstage former President Obama for not bombing in 2013.”
Ross Anderson said, “I find it interesting, but I'm not surprised that the attack was ordered by President Don- ald Trump less than 72 hours after footage emerged. But, what really concerns me is how Presi- dent Trump views changed so quickly on Syria, since he had accused our former President Barack Obama of not taking action after a similar incident in 2013 to focus on U. S. policy from re- moving Syrian President Assad to battling the spread of ISIS, which had taken over a large portion of the coun- try. In 2014, the U. S. began conducting airstrikes on ISIS in Syria.”
Mrs. Tonya Lewis said, “I feel the bombing was pre- mature. President Trump rushed to bomb Syria with- out approval of Congress. That same Congress who would not give President Obama approval to act on Syria while in office some- how let President Trump do what he pleases. I despise the chemical agent usage that killed innocent people. This is definitely unacceptable. I feel there is more to the story than being reported. This is a smoke screen for something far greater.”
Rev. Karen Jackson Sims said, “In my opinion he was wrong. He needed and wanted something to take the attention off of him, his cam- paign workers and their in- teraction with Russia. His strategy has always been de- flection, so I am not sur-

prised that he did this. Un- fortunately we may all have to pay the price.”
Mrs. Bonnye Crews said, “Given that President Trump has banned Syrian refugees from the U. S., and, for several years, has repeat- edly stood against U. S. in- volvement in Syria, this attack appears to be a politi- cal act designed to divert the country's attention from his poor performance and the Russiagate investigation.”
Family Of Seven Displaced After Fire Damages Two Homes
This home at 4012 N. 31st Street, was damaged by fire on Saturday afternoon.
The Tampa Fire Depart- ment responded to East Tampa Saturday in reference to a house fire. The fire dis- placed a family that included 1 adult and 6 children. The chil- dren range in age from 4 months to 17 years.
According to a spokesman for the Tampa Fire Depart- ment, the fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. When fire- men arrived at the scene, they found a single story brick home with heavy smoke and flames. The fire had also spread to a second home that was being remodeled.
Officials said firemen searched both structures to make sure no one was inside. They also prevented the fire from spreading to a third
home.
The fire was brought under
control at both homes in less than an hour. No injuries were reported. However, the adult and children were in need of support.
The American Red Cross was contacted on behalf of the family, officials said.
An investigator from the Fire Marshal’s Office deter- mined that the fire started after the owner began burning wood pulled out of the home being remodeled. He had placed the pile between the two homes and the fire spread from the ground to the homes.
Officials said residents should be reminded that open burning is not allowed in the City.
