Tampa AAUW To Celebrate 100th-Year Anniversary

The event is a celebration of the branch’s longevity and is a scholarship fundraiser. Tampa AAUW is the oldest branch in the State of Florida. The non-partisan, non-profit organization was established in 1881 to em- power girls and women in reaching their fullest poten- tial in the classroom, on col- lege campuses, in the workplace and in everyday life.
The keynote speaker will be Mrs. Sonja Garcia. Mrs. Garcia is a local com- munity leader and advocate for young girls and women in the community. She is a for-

In keeping with the mis- sion of the AAUW, the Tampa branch created a “Ribbon of Honor” to honor women in the community. The prospective recipients include: Dr. Ara Rogers, Director of Osher, Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI); Mrs. Betty Reed, former State House of Representa- tive, District 61; and Ms. Doris Weatherford, au- thor and historian with a focus on women and their role in history.

The fire that damaged a Tampa mosque earlier this month has been ruled as arson, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
On August 5th, a fire dam- aged the Masjid Omar Mosque on Busch Boulevard.
Initially investigators said the fire was caused by faulty electrical wires. However, samples taken from the scene tested positive for an acceler- ant, specifically gasoline.

Former Leto High School and Rutgers University foot- ball player, Jeremy Deer- ing, was arrested in New York on an outstanding war- rant and booked in Tampa Thursday night on felony charges of grand theft and de- positing checks with intent to defraud.
