Democrat Abrams Files New Suit In Georgia Governor's Race
Stacey Abrams' Demo- cratic campaign filed a federal lawsuit Sunday asking a judge to delay vote certifications in Georgia unsettled governor's race by one day and to make officials count any votes that were wrongly rejected.
If successful, the suit would prevent officials from certifying county vote totals until Wednesday and could restore at least 1,095 votes that weren't counted. The campaign said thousands more ballots could be af- fected.
Republican Brian Kemp's campaign didn't have any immediate com- ment on the lawsuit, filed over alleged problems in pop- ulous Gwinnett and DeKalb counties in metro Atlanta. But Kemp aides previously said Abrams has no path to victory and called her refusal to concede a "disgrace to
democracy."
Abrams' campaign man-
ager, Lauren Groh- Wargo, said the state's numbers can't be trusted and that 5,000 votes came in Sat- urday that previously were unknown.
"This race is not over," she said on a conference call with reporters. "It's still too close to call."
Abrams hopes to become the nation's first black woman elected governor, while Kemp is trying to maintain GOP dominance in a diversifying state that could be important in the presiden- tial election in two years.
The campaigns disagree how many votes remain to be counted. But no matter which side is right, it's clear Abrams is trailing and only a limited number of ballots are left to close the gap.
Outrageous Viral Photo Shows Stacey Abrams’ Supporters Returned Absentee Ballot For Bogus Reason
A viral photo from someone who attempted to vote for Stacey Abrams in Georgia showed a returned absentee bal- lot with a label that read “not de- liverable as addressed,” even though there was a pre-ad- dressed P.O. box on the front.
The image, which was posted by Facebook user Tiff Whit, shows the ballot was returned on November 7, one day after the polls were open.
“My absentee ballot just showed back up in my mailbox today. It says ‘return to sender... not deliverable as addressed... unable to forward.’ How is the pre-addressed PO Box not a de- liverable address? #shenani- gans,” captioned Tiff.
This photo and other stories have resulted in the legal team for Stacey Abrams’ campaign to take action against voter sup- pression. On Thursday, the team announced it would file a lawsuit in Dougherty County, where many voters claimed they were denied the opportunity to cast mail-in ballots for Tuesday’s
STACEY ABRAMS
election, reported the Albany Herald.
The Abrams campaign held a press conference saying they are pursuing multiple options to ensure that every single vote is counted.
“Our ongoing legal efforts are not about Stacey Abrams — they are about protecting our democracy and ensuring every eligible Georgian’s voice is heard,” Abrams campaign manager Lauren Groh- Wargo said in a news release late Thursday afternoon. “We will continue to advocate for every ballot to be counted and
take the appropriate legal meas- ures to ensure the legitimacy of this election.”
“We are investigating multi- ple cases from students who be- lieve they timely and properly submitted their absentee ballots but when they checked the (Georgia) Secretary of State’s website, it appears that those ballots have not yet been ac- cepted,” the campaign said. “Therefore they are not being in- cluded in the most recent count. The Secretary of State’s office has not responded to these stu- dents regarding when their votes will be counted.
“The Abrams for Governor campaign is working to try to get more information regarding the provisional ballots, but as has been conveyed, the Secretary of State’s office is being slow to re- spond. One of the challenges is that as we pursue these ques- tions, in many instances, we’re relying on hastily scribbled handwritten notes and unclear directives from the Secretary of State’s office to the counties.”
