Hello, February!
Happy February 2016! The month of February is the shortest month of the year. Its birth flower is the Violet. Feb- ruary’s birthstone is the Amethyst which symbolizes piety, humility, spir- itual wisdom, and sincerity.
The month is also known as Black History Month, American Heart Month, and Parent Leadership Month. Special calendar days in February are: National Wear Red Day, Feb. 1st; Super Bowl Sunday on the first Sunday; Groundhog Day, Feb. 2nd; Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Feb.12th; Valen- tine’s Day, Feb.14th; George Wash- ington’s birthday, Feb. 22nd; World Marriage Day, on the second Sunday; and Presidents’ Day, on the third Mon- day. Get in where you fit in! Celebrate and enjoy February!
15th Annual Faith Leaders Breakfast Held
The Healthy Start Coalition of Hardee, Highlands and Polk Counties, Inc., Teen Pregnancy Prevention Al- liance hosted its 15th annual Faith Lead- ers Breakfast on Thursday, February 4, 2016. The host-site was the Florida
Southern College Presidents Dining Hall. “Healthy Spirit, Mind, Body & Soul” was the chosen theme. Daniel Haight, MD, FACP, Associate VP of Community Health-Lakeland Regional Medical Center, served as the keynote speaker. Scott Sjoblom rendered the opening prayer which was followed by a warm welcome from Charlene Ed- wards, Executive Director.
Other programme participants were: Angela Forte, Mistress of Cer- emony; Marquinia Butts-Fisher, TPPA Program Manager; Sara Pom- ponio, Youth Program Specialist; and Talana Bethae, TPPA Chair. A musi- cal performance was rendered by Anointed Generation of Southeast- ern University.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters Seeking Families To Serve
The Big Brothers, Big Sisters com- munity-based program is designed for a “Big” (Adult) and “Little” (Child) can spend time together playing board games, fishing, baking, attending a sporting event, plus a variety of other activities. The relationship is based on spending positive, one-on-one time to- gether for a period of 15 months or
more in which the “Big” will take the “Little” on a minimum of two outings per month for 2-4 hours each time, equaling 8-10 hours spent together each month.
In Polk County, there is a Winter Haven Big Sister, age 40, who would like to be matched with a Little Sister, age 5-6 years old, who is outgoing, fun, funny, and a girly girl. She must also live in the zip codes of 33880 or 33881. The Big is open to a Little: of any race, who is active or laid back, talkative, has a family who has a history of substance abuse, who has experienced abuse; has a developmental delay, learning disabil- ity or mental health diagnosis, physical health diagnosis, ADD/ADHD (de- pending on severity); or has incarcer- ated parent(s).
