Local Golfers Recall Their Time With Golf Pro Lee Elder
Glowmour Beauty Experience And MediSpa Grand Reopening
  BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Professional golfer Dr. Robert Lee Elder passed this week. He was 87 years
old.Elder made many trips to Tampa and played in many tournaments here at Rogers Park Golf Course. He was like a ‘regular,’ being in the area on several occasions as he made many ‘firsts.’
Elder had a relationship with several of the local golf professionals. We spoke with Michael Cooper, Ph.D., who had known Elder since he was 18 years old as a teenager in Chicago, IL in 1974.
“His death is a big loss for all of golf – not just the African-American commu- nity. He lived a lifetime of being first. He was a first in so many events. He was a pi- oneer and trailblazer.
“I feel so fortunate to have known him. He was always very cordial and a genuine gentleman. He could have just met you and could gen- uinely strike up a conversa- tion with you.”
Dr. Cooper said he last spoke with Elder back in April, 2021, when he was being honored at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, GA. Local Golf Pro Kennie Sims was on the committee that

prepared the honorary recep- tion for Elder.
Elder made history for becoming the first Black player to compete for the U. S. in the 1979 Ryder Cup. He wound up with four victories on the PGA Tour and eight wins after he turned 50 on the PGA Tour Champions. He served on the board of
Goodwill and raised money for the United Negro College Fund.
Dr. Cooper, who is ‘semi-retired,’ is a professor, and former tournament di- rector for junior golf, the First Tee program. He founded Advocates Profes- sional Golf Association (APGA) in 2010.
Kennie Sims, Vice Pres- ident of Golf Operations for the Tampa Sports Authority, met Elder his freshman year of college at Fayetteville State. He was a participant in his Pro-Am tournament for more than 10 years.
He had a history at Rogers Park, participating in the Mid-Winter Golf Classics.
“He was very special to all of us, and will truly be missed. He meant a lot to me personally as a role model: he had lots of class, was will- ing to take time with you on any topic.
“His knowledge of golf, the swing, meant a lot. He loved coming to Rogers,” Sims added.
Sims said it may be 5 years since Elder was at Rogers.
