Middleton Students Participate In Inaugural Live Open Heart Surgery

Last Tuesday, 50 students at Middleton High School were given the opportunity to observe open heart surgery as it took place. This was made possible by a first of its kind partnership between Florida Hospital and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).
The open heart surgery was broadcast live in MOSI’s Coleman Science Works The- ater for the students to wit- ness as surgeons from Florida Hospital performed the sur- gical procedure.
Dr. Charles Lambert,
Florida Hospital Pepin Heart Institute Medical Director, narrated the surgery and the students were given the op- portunity to ask questions as the operation took place.
Dr. Lambert said, “We wanted the students to ask questions and interacted with medical professionals as they watched the procedure.
“This experience is the only one of its kind in Florida, where the students had the chance to witness the surgery in real time.”
Ms. LeShea Serrano,
Assistant Principal of Mag- num and Curriculum said, “It was a very, very fruitful and rich experience. The students were able to participate in live streaming, Open Heart surgery. The female patient was getting valve replace- ments.
“Afterwards, they were able to network with the physicians in the Cardiac area of Florida Hospital for future potential and career align- ment.”

the surgery.

The teachers who accom- panied the students were: Ms. LeShea Serrano, As- sistant Principal for Magnet Curriculum; Dr. Joseph Zendegui, Lead Biomed In- structor, and Ms. Dorothy Schroeder, Middleton High School Math Department Chairperson.
