Local
Church’s Partnership With Inner City School Has Positive Results
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In 2015, the State of Florida, Department of Edu- cation, rated Broward Ele- mentary School as an “F” school. That same year, Ms. Angela Livingston was promoted to principal.
She left Sulphur Springs Elementary as its Assistant Principal to become the Prin- cipal at Broward Elementary School. Under her leader- ship, the school’s grade im- proved to a “D” in 2016.
It was also in December 2016, that Rev. Dr. Glenn Dames and members of Allen Temple A. M. E. Church began a partnership with the school. And, with

the combined efforts of Ms. Livingston and the church, the school’s grade for 2017 improved to a “C.”
Ms. Livingston said, “Rev. Dames and some of the men have a mentoring

program with our male scholars and they tutor stu- dents in kindergarten through second grade.
“We’ve seen a huge im- provement, not only in their academics, but their self-
confidence and efforts as well. We’re just so apprecia- tive of them wanting to help the children and give back.”
Rev. Dr. Dames said, “Sometimes, kids see so much negativity that we have to let them know that what you see is not all there is to life. We went in to help and we’re amazed and pleased with the results. We started with helping them with be- havior and to focus on educa- tion.
“We thank God that we can plant some better seeds and God gives us increase. This shows what happens when you work together and don’t care about who gets the credit for it.”
Rev. Dr. Dames is ac-
companied by about 15 members of the church who help with mentoring, tutor- ing, and reading at the school.
A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ms. Liv- ingston relocated to Florida in 2006. She began teaching in Pinellas County and later became a member of the Hillsborough County School District.
Ms. Livingston earned her B. A. Degree from Tem- ple University and her Mas- ter’s Degree from Cheyney University. She is currently enrolled at the University of South Florida, where she is pursuing an Education Spe- cial Degree in Turnaround Leadership.
