BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
‘Tina’ Jackson is recuperating at home from recent quadruple by-pass surgery. Ap- preciation program will be around her birth- day.
Family and friends have come together to host an appreciation program honoring Mrs. Dorthenia Jackson, a popular musician who has been playing the piano since the age of 12.
Mrs. Jackson, affectionately known as “Ms. Tina,” is recuperating at home after re- cently undergoing quadruple by-pass surgery and a 2-month hospital stay.
The appreciation program will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017, 6 p. m., at Mt. Pleasant M. B. Church, Rev. C. T. Kirk- land, Pastor.
Mrs. Jackson was born on February 15, 1951 to Rev. S. D. and Dorothy Hicks. She began her education at Meacham Elementary School, continuing at Potter Elementary, Booker T. Washington Jr. High and gradu- ated from Middleton Sr. High in 1968.
‘Ms. Tina’ continued her education at Bethune-Cookman College and earned a Mas- ter’s degree in Education Leadership from the University of South Florida.
Mrs. Jackson maintained 2 jobs – at Metropolitan Insurance Company and the full time service she gave to her music ministry – all while being a wife and getting support from her husband, Sammie Jackson, and being the mother to their 3 daughters – Ali- cia, Sammitta and DeAnna.
Mrs. Jackson began playing and singing with her brothers (Ray, Joe and Sam Hicks) at an early age as they supported their father, a pastor, in his ministry. She later played for her father’s 2 churches – Shiloh M. B. Church in Lake Wales, and Progressive M. B. Church, Wauchula. She used these God- given talents to play, direct, instruct and men- tor many choirs and students in the Tampa Bay area. Along the way, she touched many
lives and still hears from many of her former students.
Although side-lined for a brief period, Mrs. Jackson is the current musician for Mt. Pleasant M. B. Church Sanctuary Choir, New Greater Friendship M. B. Church Mass Choir, Middleton Alumni Family and Friends Choir, Union #3 of the Union Foreign M. B. Association, and is President of the Union Foreign M. B. Association Music Department.
In closing, she says, “Please keep me in your prayers and I hope to see you for a spirit- filled evening on Saturday, February 11th.”
