Hillsborough County Branch NAACP Responds To Sentinel ‘Letter To The Editor’
President Yvette Lewis and members of the Hillsborough County Na- tional Association for the Ad- vancement of Colored People (NAACP) are addressing an inaccurate headline pub- lished in the Florida Sen- tinel Bulletin.
The “Letter to the Editor” on February 26, 2019 read— “STRAZ WINS STRAW POLL AND IS ENDORSED
BY NAACP AND FLORIDA SENTINEL BULLETIN ON SAME DAY.”
President Lewis imme- diately contacted the Florida Sentinel Bulletin to request a retraction after learning about the mislead- ing headline, which indicated the organization endorsed Straz.
She stated, “The National Association for the Advance-
ment of Colored People is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organiza- tion and does not endorse candidates or political parties, or engage in di- rect campaigning.”
The Hillsborough County Branch announced mayoral candidate David Straz as the winner of a recent straw poll conducted during the or- ganization’s Political Forum on February 21.
“The straw poll indicates a popular opinion and should not be confused with or inter- preted as an endorsement of the NAACP,” explained President Lewis.
The Florida Sentinel Bulletin confirmed it will issue a retraction clarifying the erroneous headline.
    Correction
A “Letter To The Edi- tor” In Tuesday’s Edition (February 26, 2019) in- correctly stated that the NAACP endorsed David Straz for Mayor.
Yvette Lewis, Presi- dent of the Hillsborough County Branch of the NAACP, explains that the NAACP DOES NOT en- dorse candidates for any office.
Mayoral candidate David Straz won the pub- lic Straw Poll at the forum hosted by the NAACP and several other organizations on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Middleton High School, but that WAS NOT an endorsement from the NAACP.
