In 1978, Rubie began her ca- reer at John Jay College of Crimi- nal Justice, City University of N. Y., while also completing her Doctoral Degree in Social Welfare at Colum- bia University. Ascending to the faculty rank of Associate Professor, Rubie, later, joined the Adminis- tration at John Jay as Dean and De- partment Chair of the S.E.E.K. Program, Dean of Academic Plan- ning, and finally as Assistant Vice President for Strategic Planning and Outcomes Assessment.
After 32 years at John Jay and 34 years working for City Univer- sity of NY, Rubie retired alongside her husband, earning the title of Professor Emeritus. In 2012 John Jay dedicated the Student Council Conference Room named for Drs. James and Rubie Malone lauding their tireless work with their stu- dent population, rounding out her life rooted in the commitment to public service, social justice, and community outreach.
Rubie is survived by her hus- band, James A. Malone; daughter, Tracy Person (Darrin), and son, Sean Malone; grandchildren: Gage P. Cook, Cameron J. Cook, Liam R. Goedig-Person, Taylor A. Malone, and Jewell R. Person; siblings: Helen L. Johnson, Zephyrhills, Florida; Herbert B. Smith (Jeris), Ave Maria, Florida; Albert E. Smith (Debra), Homosassa, Florida; Samuel R. Smith, Tampa, Florida; Aaron R. Smith, Tampa, Florida; Valerie R. Harrell (James), At- lanta, Georgia; Stanley J. Smith (Doris), Houston, Texas; Rhonda D. Ellis (Rick), Laurel, Maryland; Klisa R. Smith, Ruskin, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Rubie was predeceased by: two brothers, David R. Smith, 2012; and Eddie J. Smith, Jr., 2020.

Homegoing celebration for Mr. Sammie Lee Viverette who passed away on April 15, 2021, will be held on Saturday, May 8th, 2021 at 2 p. m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 3000 N. 29th Street, Tampa, Florida, with Pastor An- tonio Hawkins, officiating. Inter- ment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 4615 E. Hanna Avenue, Tampa, Florida.
Mr. Sammie Lee Viverette was born on February 22nd, 1955 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He was born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Lee (Cassie Nash) Viverette.
Mr. Viverette was educated in the public schools of Hillsbor- ough County and graduated from King Senior High School, Class of 1976.
JC Viverette was a former employee of Airmax. He was self- employed as a Mechanic, as well as having other skills Mega “C”.
Mr. Sammie Lee Viverette was preceded in death by: his grandfather, JC Nash; grandpar- ents, Tommie (Ruth) Viverette; parents, Tommie Lee (Cassie) Viverette; daughter, Trina Viverette, Labiuska Askiew;
DR. RUBIE SMITH MALONE
Funeral services for Rubie Smith Malone, who passed away on April 25, 2021, will take place in Brooklyn, New York at the Congre- gational Church of the Evangel on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 2 p. m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the service will be virtual, and for those interested in witnessing the ceremony a link is published below.
There will be a graveside serv- ice in Tampa, Florida, on May 15, 2021, at Rest Haven Memorial Park; at this out-of-doors grave- side ceremony, attendance restric- tions will be somewhat more relaxed.
Rubie Smith Malone was the oldest of 12 children born to Eddie James Smith, Sr. and Bernida Verdell Smith, on November 8, 1939. Rubie was educated in the Hillsborough County Public School System and graduated class Vale- dictorian from Middleton Senior High School in 1957. She contin- ued her education at Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia where she ma- jored in Mathematics, and in 1958 pledged Delta Sigma Theta. She later earned charter member sta- tus with the Tampa Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Rubie graduated in 1961 having made the Dean’s list and was listed in Who’s Who in American Col- leges and Universities.
Rubie moved to Brooklyn, New York where she met and married James Malone, a native of Akron, Ohio, and began a career of service to her community. Her other affil- iations are many: in 1968 she joined Jack and Jill of America, Inc., a national mothers and chil- dren organization for African Americans; and, in 1989, The Links Inc., an international organ- ization of friendship and service for African American women. As a teen she was baptized and served actively in Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church in Tampa. And in New York, Rubie joined her local church serving on the Deacon Board.
Rubie has always been com- mitted to public service; thus, starting out as a case worker for the Department of Social Services. She was a Counselor and Unit Su-
