Individuals wishing to pur- chase firearms in Hillsborough County must now wait an addi- tion two days before picking up the weapons. The new ordi- nance will go into effect once confirmation is received from the Office of the Secretary of State.
The Hillsborough County Commissioners voted on Wednesday during their regu- lar meeting to extend the wait- ing period from 3 to 5 days.
Commissioner Les Miller, Jr., proposed the measure in response to the mass shooting in Parkland that left 17 people dead.
He was supported by Com- missioners Pat Kemp, Vic- tor Crist, Sandy Murman, and Al Higginbotham. Commissioners Stacy White and Ken Hagan voted against the ordinance.
When contacted by the
Sentinel, Commissioner Miller said, “Hopefully, the additional two days will give authorities a chance to check the backgrounds of those buy- ing firearms. I don’t know if it

will change anything, but every little bit helps.
“This may help authorities prevent firearms from falling into the wrong arms and pre- vent some acts from happen- ing.”
When it comes to regulat- ing gun control, local cities and counties are restricted by the State Constitution, which pro- hibits them from passing gun control measures.
However, the State Consti- tution allows local government to expand the waiting period from 3 days to 5 days.
Since the massacre on Valentine’s Day, various gov- ernments have sought ways to change the State Constitution bans.

Whitley Gilbert, Dwayne Wayne, Ron Johnson and Freddie Brooks of Hillmon College were together again Monday.
The beloved cast members from the syndicated hit sit- com “A Different World” re- united at the Atlanta-based Home Depot’s headquarters to help award $360,000 to 9 His- torically Black Colleges & Uni-
versities to pay for campus ren- ovation projects.
Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer, Kadeem Harri- son and Darryl M. Bell were on hand for Home Depot’s an- nouncement of the winners.
The A Different World stars were chosen to participate be- cause of the show’s positive portrayals of HBCU life in the 1980s.
The $50,000 recipients were: Jackson State University, Lane College and Tuskegee University.
The $40,000 recipients were: the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Southern University and Talladega Col- lege.
The $30,000 recipients were: Claflin, Fayetteville State and Livingstone universities.
A five-panel group that in- cluded actor Laz Alonso picked the winners.
HBCUs have received less philanthropic support than most colleges and universities, particularly for infrastructure and campus renovation proj- ects.
