Tampa Gospel Legends Preparing For 6th Annual Quartet Reunion
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
The Tampa Gospel Le- gends is preparing for their 6th Annual Quartet Reunion, honoring quartet singers still standing 50+ years.
The reunion is Satur- day, June 9, 2018, 6 p. m. at St. John Cathedral, 3402 Bishop Eddie Newkirk Way (25th Ave.), Elder Dwight Newkirk, Pastor.
More than 6 years ago, a group of old time gospel singers came together in an effort to keep gospel music alive in the Tampa commu- nity, especially among quar- tet singers.
Those singers are sup- portive of the newfound gospel, but want to maintain the connection to ‘old fash- ion’ gospel music.
Mrs. Marie Miller put out several feelers in the
community to see if there was interest in retaining gospel music as they had known it. She was assisted in this endeavor by her hus- band, (the late) Deacon John Miller.
After several meetings with various groups, the Gospel Legends was formed.
The Gospel Legends is a
quartet choir made up of men and women of the Tampa Bay area from vari- ous groups, also family and friends. The group’s motto is, “Working Together in Love and Unity.” The group con- sists of 45+ members, rang- ing in age 26-85 years old.
“The Gospel Legends have traveled to Georgia, nursing homes, community outreach events, and many churches throughout the Bay area singing God’s Praise, praying that someone will be
saved through our singing and led to the Lord,” Mrs. Miller, Pre-sident of the Gospel Legends, said.
The Gospel Legends are excited about their special guest for the reunion. The Gospel Imperials of Huntsville, Alabama will be in town. They sing songs such as: “He’s Still Working Miracles” and “Good-Bye World.”
Also on the program will be Pastor Pee Wee Call- ins, the Harmony Winds,
the Exciting Gospel Warriors and the Mighty Traveling Stars.
The reunion is dedicated in the memory of member Deacon Miller.
“We need your support to help make this reunion a great success, especially all of the quartet groups. We look forward to seeing you,” Mrs. Miller said.
