Deputy Justified In Use Of Deadly Force
Police Seek Tips In Murder Of Transient Woman
A Hillsborough County deputy has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a shooting in September. The extensive re- view by the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office has concluded that the deputy was justified in his use of deadly force against 49-year- old James Allen Jackson on September 24, 2021.
The review determined that Jackson, after shooting a dif- ferent deputy, barricaded him- self in his home armed with a revolver. After several hours of communicating with Jackson, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team members entered the home in an attempt to extract and arrest him. Dur- ing this process, Jackson drew his revolver and in response, the deputy fired his weapon twice, in fear for his life and the lives of the other deputies pres- ent inside the residence.
The incident began when Jackson reportedly battered an elderly relative and shot a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
The incident took place Sep- tember 24, 2021, around 9:30 a. m., in the 1000 block of N. Taylor Road, in Brandon.
Upon arrival, Deputy Adriel Gonzalez, 33, and an- other deputy entered the home and attempted to make contact
with Jack- son.
Last week, police officers responded to reports of a woman being found unre- sponsive. When police arrived, they discovered the woman was deceased.
With the consent of her family, police have released her identity. She has been identified as “Jenny,” a 25- year-old transient woman.
Her body was discovered outside a home in the 8500 block of 9th Street, near Fair-
banks, in the Sulphur Springs area of town.
Police have not released the manner in which Jenny died. However, her death is being investigated as a mur- der. The investigation is con- tinuing.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to con- tact Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS or on- line at www.crimestopper- stb.com.
Jack- son refused to leave the room he had barricaded himself in. He am- bushed deputies and fired a single shot through a closed door,
striking Deputy Gonzalez. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he received treatment and was later released. No deputies returned fire at this
time.
After shooting Deputy
Gonzalez, HCSO’s SWAT, Cri- sis Negotiation Team, and Bomb Disposal Team were im- mediately activated to de-esca- late the situation. Multiple tactics were used to force Jack- son from the home including using chemical agents. Jack- son had been barricaded inside the home for several hours be- fore SWAT ultimately entered the home to find an armed and combative Jackson.
Jackson was shot by Deputy Sankar Montoute, 38, two times. Jackson was taken into custody and was alert when he was transported for treatment at a local hospital.
