Aretha Franklin, The Queen Of Soul And 'Greatest Singer Of All Time,' Dies At 76
Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, died Thursday at her Detroit home, the Associated Press reports, surrounded by fam- ily and friends. She had been battling various undisclosed illnesses for years, and, in re- cent weeks, was receiving hospice care. Franklin was 76.
As news of her declining health spread over the past few days, visitors including Stevie Wonder and the Rev. Jesse Jackson re- portedly paid their respects at her bedside. Beyoncé and Jay-Z dedicated their Mon- day concert in the Motor City to Franklin, declaring the iconic singer. “We love you,” Beyoncé said, adding a word of thanks for “the beau- tiful music.”
Over the course of her nearly seven-decade career, Franklin established herself as one of the most important artists in music history, win- ning 18 Grammy Awards, selling more than 75 million records worldwide, becoming the first female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and recording 112 charted singles on Billboard, thus setting the record for the most charted

female artist in the trade magazine’s history.
Franklin’s other acco- lades during her lifetime in- cluded three American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, three NAACP Image Awards, one Golden Globe, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Grammy Legend Award and Grammy Lifetime Achieve- ment Award, a Kennedy Cen- ter Honor, being named 2008’s MusiCares Person of the Year, and honorary de- grees from Harvard, Prince- ton, Yale, Brown, and the Berklee College of Music. She performed at Martin Luther King’s memorial
service and at the inaugura- tions of three presidents: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clin- ton, and Barack Obama.
Franklin gave her final performance on Nov. 7, 2017, at Elton John’s 25th an- niversary gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York City, at which John declared Franklin the “greatest singer of all time.”
However, Franklin’s last public concert took place sev- eral months earlier, on Aug. 26, at the Mann Center in Philadelphia. A review of that show in the Philadelphia In- quirer said, “Regardless of advancing years and medical setbacks, Franklin seemed largely undiminished in voice or spirit, even if her exclama- tions sometimes soared past the limits of her breath. ... The extended coda of ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman’ was a showstopper, reminding the enthralled au- dience that even if she could- n’t quite ascend to the heights of her younger days, Franklin had a gift that was more about wringing pro- found emotion from a lyric than about vocal gymnas- tics.”
The Queen of Soul will truly be missed by many.
JAY-Z And Drake Hug It Out During On The Run II Tour Stop In Detroit
Though at times JAY- Z and Drake's relationship has been a bit contentious, their mutual respect for each other's craft has never wa- vered. On Monday night (Aug. 13), the two rap titans shared an endearing moment during Hov and Beyoncé's On the Run II Tour stop in Detroit.
In a newly-released video, Drake is beaming with joy as he approaches Jay and ex- tends his arms out for a big hug. Later, Roc Nation's sen- ior vice president, Lenny S., grabs a rare photo of both men posing together.
Last June, the 6 God nabbed Hov for another note- worthy collaboration, titled "Talk Up," which appeared on his double-album Scorpion.

The DJ Paul-produced track finds Hov and Drake thrash- ing their detractors with swag- gering verses, most notably the notorious George Zim- merman, the man responsi- ble for Trayvon Martin's death. "Y'all killed X and let Zimmerman live, shhh, s- streets is done," raps Jay on the track.
Childish Gambino and 'Atlanta' Nominated For 16 Emmys
It's no secret that Childish Gambino's FX series At- lanta has been a monumental hit, and that's now being re- flected in the 2018 awards circuit as the show was nomi- nated for 16 Emmys today (July 12), reports Billboard.
According to The Holly- wood Reporter, Atlanta itself was nominated for the Emmy for a Comedy Series. Donald Glover himself nabbed the Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Earn in the show, Brian Tyree Henry, who plays Glover's cousin Al- fred (a.k.a. Paper Boi) was nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Zazie Beets, who plays Van, Earn's co-parent and somewhat-girlfriend, was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Atlanta is no stranger to the Emmy Awards. In 2017, Donald Glover took home awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Se- ries and Outstanding Direct- ing for a Comedy Series for the show. He also swept at the Golden Globes that year, where he won Best Perform- ance by an Actor in a Televi-
sion Series – Musical or Com- edy and Atlanta also won Best Television Series in Comedy.
The 2018 Golden Globe Awards will kick off on Sun- day, Sept. 17, at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los An- geles. Colin Jost and Michael Che of Saturday Night Live will host the evening's festivities.
