Documentary Explores America After The Civil War To Air Tuesday On PBS (Tonight)
Four-hour film explores the United States’ emergence from the Civil War and slavery, and the era’s thwarted vision for an interracial democracy that haunts the country more than 150 years later.
RECONSTRUCTION: AMERICA AFTER THE CIVIL WAR, a new four- hour documentary executive produced and hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., premieres Tuesdays, April 9, and 16, 2019, 9-11:00 PM (ET) on WEDU.
Professor Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard Univer- sity and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Re- search, presents the definitive history of one of the least un- derstood chapters in Ameri- can history — the transformative years follow- ing the American Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss, massive de- struction and revolutionary social change.
The documentary is a pro- duction of McGee Media, Inkwell Films and WETA
Washington, D.C. “Reconstruction is one of
the most important and con- sequential chapters in Amer- ican history,” said Gates. “It is also among the most over- looked, misunderstood and misrepresented. Our film will tell the real story of Recon- struction, honoring the strug- gle of the African Americans who fought their way out of slavery and challenged the nation to live up to the found- ing ideals of democracy, free- dom and equality.
But we will also tell the tragic story of the sustained and often violent pushback against Reconstruction’s de- termination to secure equal rights for Black people, and the subsequent rise of white supremacy leading to the im- plementation of Jim Crow segregation. More than 150 years later, this struggle con- tinues.”
