When Ms. Kimberly Franklin talks about her dad, she wants people to know that he loved the Florida Sentinel Bul- letin. She says he has Sentinels in his safe of events special to him, dating back to the 1990s.
“He made sure he picked up the paper every week,” she said via phone from Atlanta, GA.
In addition to his love for the newspaper, she says he was also a dedicated member of the 1965 Middleton High School graduat- ing class.
“They are a very close class and he enjoyed being a part of that,” she said.

Reverend Willie Dixon, Founder and CEO of COACH Foundation, Inc., has hosted an annual Juneteenth Celebration since 2012, after re- alizing many Tampa community members were unaware of the holiday’s significance.
The inaugural planning com- mittee which included Candy Lowe, Life Malcolm, Jarvis El- Amin, Chloe Coney, Richard Burton, Connie Burton, Denise Pate, William Dennis and several others provided the solid foun- dation for the first Juneteenth Celebration in the City of Tampa.
The live event is typically standing room only with enter- tainment, panelists, and civic ed- ucation including mock elections. In fact, the celebration outgrew its first venue, The Hope Center on 22nd Street and is customarily held at the Charles Davis Conference Center

in Tampa.
For the past three years, the
West Tampa Juneteenth Coali- tion, Eddie Adams and the 100 Black Men and COACH estab- lished a partnership to conduct Juneteenth activities for the en- tire month of June in the Tampa Bay area.
Rev. Dixon exclaims, “The history of Juneteenth is an inte- gral part of American history and should be taught in all grade schools and colleges. I’m proud to be in partnership with other groups having special events to spread the word about June- teenth.”
This year, due to the spread of COVID-19, COACH Founda- tion is presenting its annual event online. It takes place Sat- urday, June 27 at 1 p. m.
