Retired Educator To Seek District 5 School Board Post
17th Annual

For more than 40 years,
Henry “Shake” Washing- ton served as an educator in Hillsborough County. He re- tired in July 2017.
Recently, Washington announced his plans to cam- paign for the District 5 Seat on the Hillsborough County School Board. He is challeng- ing Ms. Tamara Sham- burger who currently holds the District 5 Seat.
Washington said, “I was born and raised here and grew up in District 5. District 5 is a needy district. I have been in the system for 42 years and I have spent most of my life in District 5.”
He plans to focus on Eq- uity in Education, Engage with the community, and uti- lize his experience to accom- plish his goals.
Washington is a prod- uct of the Hillsborough County Public School Dis- trict. He earned the nick- name “Shake” as a athlete. He was quarterback and co-
cation, and served as Coach for girls and boys basketball teams, earning the title of “Coach of the Year” in basket- ball.
He rose through the ranks of the school district, being appointed as Assistant Prin- cipal for Student Affairs at Chamberlain High School, He later became principal at Chamberlain.
Middleton High School closed its doors in 1971. In August 2002, a newly con- structed high school opened its doors in East Tampa, a few blocks from the original school. Washington was named its first principal and oversaw the opening. After serving three years as Princi- pal, he was appointed Area Director for Area IV Schools.
Washington has been married to Mrs. Cheryl Byrd Washington for the past 38 years and is the fa- ther of two adult children, Henry Washington, Jr., and Dr. JaMia Washing- ton. The family worships at Allen Temple A. M. E. Church.

On Sunday, November 24th, Ms. Tonya Lewis and several volunteers will host her Annual Thanksgiving Blessing.
The event will take place at the Open Air Market, 3602 N. 29th Street, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., corner of N. 29th Street and E. Lake Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.
Ms. Lewis said, “This is my 17th Annual Thanksgiving Blessing Event. I am inviting the entire community to come out and join us.”
The menu will consist of turkey, ham, baked chicken, turkey wings, collard greens, black-eye peas, yams, dressing macaroni and cheese, and po- tato salad. There will also be a variety of desserts and drinks.
Those in attendance will enjoy a hot Pre-Thanksgiving meal, entertainment, live music, kid zones, giveaways,

‘High Power Party’ Coming To Tampa

The Fourth Annual National FAM Awards Honor Kindness
Today, Friday, November 22, 2019, 12 noon–2:30 p. m.
The Fourth Annual Na- tional FAM Awards will be held today, Friday, Novem- ber 22, 2019, at the Chil- dren’s Board of Hillsborough County, 1002 E. Palm Av- enue, Tampa. Registration is at 11:30 a. m. and the pro- gram begins at 12 noon.
This special ceremony celebrates the real-life ac- tions of caring individuals just as the Academy Awards recognize the accomplish- ments of actors. It culmi- nates the year-long activities encompassing Kindness of the Heart, an ongoing cele- bration of the positive that will continue in 2020 and beyond.
The purpose of the event is to emphasize the impor- tance of simple kindness when its value is too often minimized by the dispropor- tionate attention given to ac- tions that are anything but
kind.
Family Flame Awards
and $100 gift cards will be presented by a broad range of community leaders to in- dividuals who were nomi- nated through videos submitted in the following categories: Parent, Child, Sister, and Volunteer of the Year. Other awards are being presented for Random Acts of Kindness, Excellence in the Golden Rule, Praise & Gratitude, Kind Programs & Initiatives, and Kindness to Animals.
