When families purchased homes in the Belmont Heights Estates, they never dreamed that those homes would become an immediate problem.
But four of those families learned that Chinese drywall had been used in building their homes. They were sud- denly in a situation that didn’t seem to have a positive out- come.
However, after local offi- cials learned about their situ- ations, members of the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners, the Tampa City Council, and the Tampa Housing Authority vowed to assist the families.
KEN HAGAN Hillsborough County Commissioner
On Thursday morning,
Commissioner Ken Hagan announced plans to provide for those families be- fore his fellow commissioners.
“We’ve been able to get them into extended stay ho- tels and they will move into apartments until their homes
are repaired. They won’t be able to take their furniture when they move back into their homes because of con- tamination. And, the federal dollars we have can’t be used to replace the furniture.
“I reached out to my friends at Rooms To Go and they will provide each family with a $3,000 vouchers to ob- tain new furniture. All they have to do is go into any store to use the vouchers.”
Commissioner Hagan
further said the repairs to the homes will take up to 9 months and the inside of the homes will be rebuilt just as they were. It will cost approx- imately $95,000 to repair each home.
“These families are ex- tremely appreciative,” he said.
