Former U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) speaks during fu- neral services for late U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., October 25, 2019. Mfume announced Monday he would seek Cummings' seat in a special election.
President Donald Trump hopes to recruit Black voters to support his campaign with a new coalition he plans to launch this week in Atlanta.
Trump’s campaign an- nounced on Monday its “Black Voices for Trump” initiative, which aims to recruit and en- gage Black Americans to sup- port Trump during the 2020 presidential election. Vice President Mike Pence will address the group at an event on Friday in Atlanta, according to a senior campaign official.
Just a reminder that Trump won about 8% of the black vote in 2016.

A convoy of SUVs carrying American moms, kids, and ba- bies in Mexico was attacked by drug cartel gunmen on Mon- day, killing at least nine pas- sengers, including several children, authorities said.
The victims, many of whom had dual Mexican-American citizenship, were members of the extended LeBarón family and belonged to a Mormon off- shoot group that had settled in Bavispe in the Mexican border state of Sonora more than 50 years ago, according to Mexi- can officials.
The three cars packed with kids and babies were heading to the Mexican state of Chi- huahua when they came under heavy gunfire that left the ve- hicles burned out and riddled with bullets. Three women and six children, including 8- month-old twins, died in the horrific attack.
The decision to hold the Democratic presidential de- bate at a film studio in south- west Atlanta was a victory for both the city and the cele- brated moviemaker who wants to cement Georgia’s reputation as an alternative to Hollywood. The $250 million Tyler Perry Studio will welcome the top Democratic presidential candi- dates on Nov. 20 and the at- tention of the political world after it beat out a push from several suburban sites, includ- ing a posh new performing arts center in Sandy Springs.
The debate’s co-hosts, MSNBC and The Washington
Katrina Pierson, Senior Ad- visor at Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. wrote in a state- ment emailed to Newsweek. “The Black Voices for Trump coalition will be a national ef-
fort to mobilize and empower Black Americans who support President Trump to help get the message of ‘Promises Made, Promises Kept’ into communities across America.”
The special election to re- place late Rep. Elijah Cum- mings, D-Md., is heating up as former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume announced plans Monday to seek his old seat again.
Mfume, a Democrat who represented the Baltimore- area congressional seat be- fore Cummings from 1987 to 1996, is the second candi- date to enter the Democratic primary. Talmadge Branch, the House of Dele- gates Majority Whip, said he would run on Thursday, ac- cording to the Baltimore Sun. Cummings' widow, Maya Rockeymoore-
Cummings, has also said she is also considering join- ing the race.
"I honestly believe that I've got to find a way to make sure that all [Cummings] and others fought for is not lost, tossed to the side and forgot- ten," Mfume said to sup- porters at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore during the official kick-off of his campaign Monday, citing his previous experience in the seat and time as NAACP president as qualifications. "If I were not trusted, pre- pared and ready to go to work on day one I would not be here."

Mexican Security Secretary Alfonso Durazo said during a Tuesday press conference that the gunmen, who have not been identified, may have mis- taken the group’s armed SUVs for those of a rival gang.
Durazo said eight people survived the attack, including six children who were wounded, five of whom have
been transferred to hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona. Troops are still searching for a missing child, he added.
The LeBarón family has been targeted by cartel vio- lence before, including in July 2009, when anti-crime activist Benjamin LeBarón and his brother-in-law were murdered by gunmen.
