BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
December 14, 2019 will always be a special day for Steve Scott and Ms. Katherine Palmer. Both competed in the annual Florida State Seniors Shuf- fleboard Competition on that day. And, both brought home the gold.
The tournament was held in Hollywood, Florida this year.
Scott said, “We have been awarded the gold medal in the Florida Sen- iors games that were played in Hollywood. Ms. Palmer has won two gold medals. She has won com- petitions before. But, I am extremely happy because I have been trying to win the gold medial and this year, I was successful.”
Scott further said that they were the only African Americans participating in
the competition.
He further stated that he
trained Ms. Palmer. “She went to the competition after I trained her and won all three games. She brought home the Gold Medal. It was so good to see that. And that is what moti- vated me to train other African Americans to play shuffleboard so they can compete.”
Ms. Palmer won in the women’s division. Scott captured the gold in the men’s division.”
More than a year ago, Scott formed a shuffle- board organization for sen- ior citizens. He selected Ms. Palmer as his Assis- tant Trainer and Director. And since that time, the number of people wanting to learn the game has in- creased.
