JOYCE ANN HARRIS Sunrise: November 27, 1941 Sunset: March 20, 2008
It’s hard to believe it has been 11 years since you left this Earth. Although we miss you tremendously, you have left us with so many wonder- ful memories that continue to soothe our aching hearts.
We also have 11 new rea- sons to smile. We love you and miss you Mom, and we know you are dancing with the Angels in Heaven.
Happy Birthday from your children, sister, and family.
Jamaal Byrd was ar- rested on Sept. 30 because he was suspected of selling mar- ijuana. On Oct. 1, he was found dead in his cell. Ac- tivists have been demanding answers for months and are reportedly getting little to no cooperation from police.
According to The Wash- ington Post, a D.C. police re- port claims he “was arrested Sept. 30 on suspicion of sell- ing marijuana at a restaurant in the 1500 block of North Capitol Street. Byrd was transported to the District’s Central Cell Block at 300 In- diana Avenue NW, in the basement of D.C. police head-

quarters. It was there that Byrd and other arrestees were held until their initial hearing at D.C. Superior Court.”
Less than seven hours later, Byrd was discovered in his cell. He was allegedly alone and passed out on his bed. A guard performed CPR and he was taken to a hospi- tal. The 33-year-old was pro- nounced dead at 1:15 a.m.
Roxane Johnson, Byrd’s mother said in a state- ment, “We need answers. My son was in great health. What happened to cause his death while in the custody of the DC Department of Corrections? Nothing will bring my son back — but I am demanding to know what happened to my son! He meant the world to me and my family.”

was taken from him at the time he turned himself in.
The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. at a QV convenience store at the inter- section of Highway 21 and Highway 97 in Hayneville in Lowndes County. Authorities and Williams’ relatives said the sheriff responded to the store when the owner called lawmen because there was a crowd hanging out in the parking lot and he wanted

them dispersed.
ALEA Trooper Sgt. Steve
Jarrett and ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor spoke with the media late Saturday night, calling Williams’ death a blow to the law enforcement community. “It’s a very sad time for Lowndes County and the state of Alabama,'' said Jarrett, who said he had known Williams for most of their law enforcement ca- reers.”
“He was a wonderful man,'' Jarrett said. “Every- body in law enforcement knew him. If you ever met him, you’d never forget him. He worked 24/7 and was an out- standing sheriff.”
Williams is the fifth Ala- bama law enforcement officer killed this year in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and children, who were on the scene. “We’re taking good care of them,” Jarrett said.
