Readers Respond To Cosby Sentencing
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Tuesday, comedian Bill Cosby was handed down a sentence of three to 10 years in prison. The judge showed leniency because he could have given Cosby the maximum of 30 years in prison.
Cosby was convicted of putting drugs in drinks of several women and having sex with them in April. After the sentencing, Judge or- dered that Cosby, who is now 81-years-old and blind, be taken into custody.
Some Sentinel readers feel that Cosby is guilty, some refuse to assign any guilty to him, and others feel his age and health should be taken into consideration. Some of their comments are as follows:
Mrs. Bonnye Crews
said, “Who could have imag- ined that all those years
Cosby spent criticizing poor Blacks for their moral fail- ings, he had a long history of his own moral vices? And so, if the various assault allega- tions against him are true (and I believe most are), I think Bill Cosby is not above the law and should be sentenced accordingly.”
Ricky Williams said, “I believe his age and health should definitely be taken into consideration.”
Dr. Samuel Wright said, “This Cosby ordeal sickens me to the core! It saddens me to discuss this matter, for he was one of our iconic figures for decades and many of us are astounded about his fall from grace!
“As one who advocates for justice, I don't condone
wrong doings and since he has been convicted, I am sure the courts will offer some level of punishment, how- ever, I hope his age and health are taken into consid- eration where his sentencing won't be so punitive. I pray for the brother and his entire family.”
Danny
Green
said, “Yes, I think his health and his age should be consid- ered. Any amount of time in prison is a life sentence for him. I'm very disap- pointed with what happened to him. I see a lot of other people had got away with the same crime. I just hope and pray all the allegations are not true. I pray for him and
his family.”
