Organizations Plan ‘Wakanda The Vote’ Party
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Sunday, September 30th, several organizations will host a get-out-the vote initiative. Its purpose is to increase the number of African Americans at the polls for the upcoming election.
Entitled “Wakanda The Vote,” the event will be held from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., at THAP 5508 N. 50th Street, Tampa, 33610. It is being hosted by Mor- ris and Deatra Martin, of Next Level Entertain- ment; Keith and Monica Harris, of KeMon Con- nects; Clemmon Hodges and Erica K. Williams, Esq.
The goal of the event is to register, educate and
inform residents about the importance of registering and voting during this mid-term election. The plans are anticipating sev- eral hundred people to at- tend the event.
Martin, a popular event promoter, had an idea to utilize his years of experience hosting events to get more African Amer- icans involved in the up- coming mid-term elections. Additionally,
Attorneys, and sisters, Monica Harris and Erica Williams (for- merly of 6 Footahs, LLC), had separately discussed organizing an event to in- crease voter awareness and participation. Mrs. Harris, who along with husband, Keith, decided to form KeMon Connects
MRS. MONICA HARRIS Co-organizer of the event
to act as a catalyst to bring the many local organiza- tions focused on commu- nity improvement together for these types of efforts.
The parties merged their ideas and the event
was born. The organizers chose the specific date and time to encourage partici- pation by all community organizations including churches and Greek-letter organizations.
Although event organ- izers stress that this will be a non-partisan event, local elected officials and candidates are invited to attend the event and share their platforms with guests.
Representatives from the Hillsborough County of Supervisor Tables will be set up for the Supervi- sor of Elections and in-
vited guests to register voters and distribute in- formation.
They will be treated to free food and musical en- tertainment as well as speakers to spur more African American voter awareness and involve- ment in state and local elections. The event will be held at THAP 5508 Co- Working and Collabora- tion Exchange, a unique East Tampa location that features shared work spaces and a small busi- ness incubator program in addition to a 10,000 square-foot events hub.
