BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
The 9th Portable Shuffle- board Tournament took place on Friday, October 27th. The event was held at the Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue.
This month, three mem- bers earned the title of cham- pions. The first place titles went to Ms. Linda Cotney and Ms. Connie Bowen. Ms. Quency Jefferson earned the second place title. The ladies represent the Spring Hill Community Cen- ter, Fair Oaks Community Center, and Ragan Park Com- munity Center, respectively.
Seniors participating in the 9th Shuffleboard Tournament last month included Steve Scott Director and Trainer, Earlene Cohen, Connie Bowen, Linda Cotney, Mary Hills, Katherine Palmer, Assistant Trainer, Audrey Acosta, Janis Harden, Delores Wash- ington, Quency Jefferson, Paula Malone, Vonnie Scott, Christine Mitchell, and Willie Mae Gardner.
Each month, Steve Scott, Director and Trainer of the
team, sponsors the shuffle- board tournaments. The first and second place winners each win a gift card.
The teams currently use temporary or portable shuffle- board to play during the month. However, Scott has been campaigning to obtain a permanent shuffleboard court in the East community.
His efforts are paying off because he said the City of Tampa is working on building a permanent shuffleboard for East Tampa residents.
Seniors interested in learn- ing to play shuffleboard can visit Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue. Scott teaches the game to senior citizens on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. He also teaches the game at Cyrus Greene Com- munity Center on Thursday, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
Scott said he uses portable shuffleboards to train seniors at Williams Park and Fair Oaks Community Cen- ters.
Anyone wishing to learn more about shuffleboard matches or other senior activ- ities at Ragan Park can call (813) 242-5316.
Fashion Show Founder Focuses On Self-Esteem
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Several years ago, a Tampa woman decided to create a vehicle to make a certain group of women feel good about themselves. She decided the best way to accomplish this goal was to put them in the spotlight.
And that was the birth of Exotic Elegance, an organization that focuses on fashions for plus size women. Realizing that all women are differ- ent sizes, Ms. Rhonda Gray said, “It is my pas- sion to make women feel beautiful and good about themselves, by promoting high, self-es- teem in fashion.
“This is for teenage girls and women, and through fashion, I can reach more women, after all, who don’t want to look fabulous?”
With this thought in mind, Ms. Gray hosted the first fashion show 15 years ago. Since that time, she has hosted dozens of events and con- tinues to concentrate on fashion and the plus size woman.
In addition to Ms. Gray, the troupe of mod- els, known as the “Divas of Design,” includes: Linda Bush, Carrol Ingram, Veronica Vann, Engria Alderman, Iris Gunn, Kenyetta White, Camille Curtis, Celesian Harris, Tiffany Morris, Donnetta Walker, LaQuinda Lang, Sereeta Brown, and Quin

On Saturday, the “Divas of Design” will
once again delight their audience as they model the latest fashion in the “My Size Is Beauti- ful” Fashion Show. The event will take place at the Quality Inn, 2701 E. Fowler Avenue. For more information contact Ms. Gray at (813) 965-8200.
