District Attorney Says Deputies'
Actions Were 'Justified' In
Shooting Of Andrew Brown, Jr.
At Least 19 Shot, 6 Killed In Another Violent Weekend In Atlanta
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- District Attorney Andrew Womble said Tuesday that the deputies who shot and killed Andrew Brown Jr. on April 21 were justified in their actions and would not face criminal charges.
“Mr. Brown's death, while tragic, was justified, be- cause Mr. Brown's actions caused three deputies with the Pasquotank County Sher- iff's Office to reasonably be- lieve it was necessary to use deadly force to protect them- selves and others," Womble said before showing the body camera video to the public for the first time.
Brown's family, who had already seen the video in question, previously said the video showed Brown, afraid for his life, backing away and then driving off in an attempt to escape being killed.
The deputies were at his home serving arrest and search warrants following an investigation that authorities said linked him with drug-re-

lated crimes. They learned of Brown's location and ar- rived there around 8:30 a.m. to arrest him.
The total time the deputies interacted with Brown-- from the moment they jumped out of the truck to the moment they pulled Brown's body out of his crashed vehicle--was 44 sec- onds.
Womble showed four dif- ferent deputy body camera videos of those 44 seconds.
ATLANTA — It has been a deadly few days in Atlanta with multiple shootings happening in the city since last Friday.

In all of the shootings, police have not made any arrests.
Three people were shot in busy Buckhead shopping and residential area after pool party dispute spilled into the parking lot near a Home Depot on Saturday evening.

rate incidents. Two of them happened at nightclubs.
Police say they responded around 3 a.m. Monday to the scene at 1919 Metropolitan Parkway where a man was shot and killed outside Lacura Bar and Bistro. They also said a man was shot and killed inside Azule Restaurant and Lounge off Piedmont Road in Buck- head.
All this comes as city lead- ers scramble to get a hold on
the gun violence in Atlanta. The Atlanta City Council will consider legislation to create a public safety commission to figure out how to tackle the crime in the city. It would be comprised of people from all over the city, including law en- forcement, fire and emergency personnel - along with people from the judicial system.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms also issued a state- ment Monday evening about the weekend crime.
"Atlantans deserve and ex- pect a safe community," she said. "As our Administration continues to put considerable resources towards ending this COVID crime wave, the Anti- Violence Advisory Committee will begin work this week to make additional recommenda- tions to help improve public safety throughout our city.”
