Wins Historic
Shot Put Gold
With two main goals al- ready accomplished – gold medals in both the team competition and in the indi- vidual all-around – Simone Biles turned to the vault to grab more Olympic gold Sunday. She beat seven other gymnasts in the individual event.
"It's something I wanted so badly," Biles said after- wards, "so I just tried to keep a good mind going into vault."
As U.S. Gymnastics tells us, Sunday’s gold medal, Biles sets a U.S. record for the most gymnastics gold medals in one Olympics for a female athlete. She also be- comes the first American woman to win gold on the vault.
Going last in a field of eight gymnasts, Biles needed an average score of
MICHELLE CARTER
With a final, herculean hurl, Michelle Carter scored a gold medal in the women's shot put final Fri- day night in Rio — a first for any U.S. woman in the event.
Taking advantage of that reserved energy, Carter truly saved her best for last.
Her winning throw, and a personal best, came in her last attempt at 20.63 meters, upsetting the favorite, Va- lerie Adams of New Zealand, who delivered 20.42 meters on her second throw. Adams' shortfall ended her three-time consecutive gold medal run.
The 30-year-old busted another record at her third Olympics: She and her fa- ther, Michael, are now Team USA's first father- daughter combination to medal at the Games.
Michael Carter won sil- ver in the same event at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

more than 15.253 to claim gold. She unleashed a soar- ing Amanar on her first vault, taking a small hop backwards as she landed. Score: 15.900.
For her next vault, Biles turned to a Cheng — a diffi- cult vault that, compared to the Amanar, is worth an extra tenth of a point on the judges' scale — and per- formed it nearly flawlessly. Her score was the highest of the group: 16.033.
Venus Williams Falls Short of Olympic History In Mixed Doubles Final
Bethanie Mattek- Sands and Jack Sock rolled to an upset victory in the mixed-double final Sunday, beating fellow Americans Venus Williams and Ra- jeev Ram, 7-6 (3), 6-1, 10-7, denying Williams a chance to become the first five-time champion in Olympic tennis history.

outfits as for her tennis, wore knee-high socks in the colors of the U.S. flag Sunday. When the match ended, she threw her racket in the air, embraced Sock and was then wrapped in a warm hug by Williams.
Williams, 36, who was also bidding to become the first player to win gold medals in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, came to Rio slowed by a virus and wasn’t planning on playing mixed doubles. But after losing in the first round of the singles and doubles competitions, she teamed with Ram and entered the 16-team draw for the mixed competi- tion.
Hey, Derek Jeter! What’s New? ‘I Got Married, Man’
Williams has won four gold medals since 2000 and another Sunday would have broken a tie with sister Ser- ena.
After a back-and-forth first set that lasted 55 minutes, Mattek-Sands and Sock jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second set before Williams and Ram clawed back, thanks in part to Mattek- Sands, who suddenly lost her serve.
But they recovered to win the set when a Williams re- turn sailed long, forcing a 10- point tiebreak they also won.

For more than four decades, Derek Jeter was a bachelor. But not anymore.
And yes, Jeter’s marriage to swimsuit model Hannah Davis has changed his life. On Saturday, the Yankee great, on hand at Yankee Sta- dium as the club honored the 1996 World Series champi- onship team, was asked how he spends his days now that they’re not dominated by the diamond.
Jeter had a quick answer.
“I got married, man,” he said. “So yeah, there it is.”
Jeter married Davis in July, in a ceremony in Cali- fornia, and after years of dat- ing such famous celebs as Mariah Carey, Minka Kelly and Jordana Brew- ster, it actually surprised sev- eral of his old teammates.
Longtime Yankee closer Mariano Rivera even joked that he thought it would be another few years before
Derek Jeter and Hannah Davis were married in July.
Jeter got married.
“We were hoping that it
would happen earlier,” Rivera said of Jeter getting hitched. “Like, before it comes to 50.”
Instead, Jeter, who is nearly two years into his re- tirement from baseball, waited until he was 42 to get married. He spends most of his days in Tampa Bay now, he said, although he added that he does return to New York City for “business.

A day after LeBron James signed a three-year, $100 million deal to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the NBA Finals MVP traveled down to Ohio's capital Columbus, where Drake's Summer Sixteen tour stopped Saturday, to join the rapper onstage.
"Ohio, if you don't make some noise for 'the King' right now you're out of your mind," Drake said to the rapturous crowd as he intro- duced James. "Now we gotta do it for old time's sake."
