Free College Readiness Workshop Helps Prepare Students

With the uncertain times that these United States of America are experiencing, Ms. Elaine Thompson of the Black Scholars Heading To College Program be- lieves it’s still important to help students.
“It is so critical to me that we get these kids some help. And I am going to re- main committed to doing what I can to provide assis- tance even in the midst of this global pandemic,” Ms. Thompson stated.
Even with the social dis- tancing and wearing masks, Ms. Thompson developed a way to reach the students who are looking for help as they navigate colleges.
The Virtual Free College Readiness Workshop for High School Students, 2020-2021, kicked off this past Saturday, Sept. 5th. Ad- ditional workshop dates are: Saturdays, Septem- ber 26th, October 31st, and November 21st, 10 a. m. – 12:30 p. m.

dents in getting accepted to great colleges and being able to afford to attend those great colleges without substantial loans,” she ex- plained.
Presented by the Black Scholars Heading to College Program, topics for the workshop may include:
1 Researching potential colleges and the required tests for majors and com- pleting college research worksheets
2. Discovering Test Op- tional Colleges and Univer- sities
3. High School Course Selection and Course Per-
formance
4. How to Get Free Trips
to visit top colleges (the fly- ins) and visiting college fairs
5. Teacher, Counselor, and Community Service Recommendations
6. Internships, Summer Programs, Community Service/Volunteering, and Extracurricular Activities
7. Standardized Tests - ACT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests
8. Fee waivers for admis- sion applications and stan- dardized testing
9. Scholarships
10. Managing Social Media Accounts
11. AP Courses and study aids; free online study aids; and
12. Completing college admissions application, in- cluding obtaining fee waivers.

Mayor’s Youth Corps Recruiting Class Of 2021
Tampa teens wanting to give back to their community and looking for a glimpse into the workings of City Hall, are invited to apply for seats on the Mayor’s Youth Corps.
The Mayor’s Youth Corps is comprised of students in grades 9, 10, or 11, who live in and/or attend a public or pri- vate high school within the Tampa city limits. Applications are now being accepted for one-year terms.
Applications are available on City of Tampa Mayor’s Youth Corps webpage and will be accepted until October 22, 2020 at 5 p. m.
Members of the Youth Leadership Council review the applica- tions, conduct interviews, and make recommendations regard- ing acceptance into the program.
Youth Corps members learn about and participate in city gov- ernment, meet with Mayor Jane Castor, conduct community service projects, participate in state and national conferences, and run social media platforms that include video production. Teens also learn leadership and employability skills while serving in the Youth Corps.
The Mayor’s Youth Corps provides a forum for Tampa teens to engage with city leaders, participate in their community, con- nect with their peers, and learn about civics and city govern- ment. It is an incredible opportunity that will give them experience and know-how to help their community.

The East Tampa Business and Civic Association (ETBCA) and Woodland Terrace Crime Watch, in conjunction with Food Share, Inc., will be hosting a Drive Through Food Drive.
